Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan has been a great actor, an even bigger director and above all an excellent human being. He has touched the world with his humility. Aamir Khan has certainly been one of the most successful actors of Bollywood.

He was born in Mumbai in a traditional muslim family. It is said that he is a descendant of the great freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Aamir Khan has Bollywood in his veins. His father Tahir Hussain was a producer. The famous director Nasir Hussain is his uncle. With this pedigree Aamir Khan was destined to be a big name in Bollywood. Aamir Khan began his acting career as a child actor. He acted in Yaadon Ki Baraat in 1973 with his cousin Tariq. He made his debut in a Ketan Mehta film Holi in 1984. Success eluded this great Bollywood actor for another four years. The young generation was looking for fresh faces and a change. In 1988 came the great musical story Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. It had Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla in the lead. Aamir Khan went on to win the Filmfare Award for the Best Debut for this role in the movie. A new star was born.

Aamir Khan entered the struggle phase of his career thereafter. He did films which did not do too well at the Box Office. However Dil(along with actress Madhuri Dixit and Anupam Kher) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar(co-starring with Ayesha Julka) were two very good movies for the Bollywood actor in the early nineties. "Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin" opposite Pooja Bhatt and directed by Mahesh Bhatt was another hit. And then the movie Rangeela rocked Bollywood and firmly established the Aamir Khan brand. Urmilla Matondkar played the actress role in Rangeela along with Aamir. It propelled the actor towards becoming a superstar. 1996 saw the launching of Raja Hindustani a melodrama staring Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor. This was a super duper hit which broke all Bollywood records. This movie also gave Aamir Khan the Filmfare Best Actor Award after being nominated for it eight times. The actor had forced Bollywood to take notice of him. He also acted with beautiful bollywood actress Neelam in the 1991 movie Afsana Pyaar Ka.

Ironically after the first major success the career of the actor hit a plateau. Ishq and Ghulam were only moderately successful films. Aamir Khan developed a unique trend. He seemed to be going in for quality than numbers. His trend for making quality films took roots in this period. He pulled out of the rat race for signing maximum number of films but decided to do quality movies instead. In 1999 Sarfarosh was a hit. His role of a dashing inspector was lauded and earned critical acclaim. The new Millennium saw a new venture along with his brother, Faisal, he acted in Mela. But the film bombed at the box office. Unlike other Khans, Aamir Khan was doing only one odd film per year. He got praised for his performance in Deepa Mehta's Earth which was an offbeat film. Aamir Khan seemed to be doing more inclined in doing a film with a message for society in it rather than run of the mill films. This trend of his was to earn him accolades in the days ahead.

Then came Lagaan, one of the greatest movies starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh. It is a brilliant movie which depicts the value of team work. It conveyed the message of how unity could combine to defeat all odds. Aamir Khan's role was appreciated all over the country. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. The movie was also nominated for an Academy Award in Foreign Movie category. This was closely followed by 'Dil Chahta Hai' directed by Farhan Akhtar and co-starring with Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Dimple Kapadia and Sonali Kulkarni. This was a great movie which won the hearts of the young generation. The story is about friendship of three young men and was a super hit. He also played a leading role in 2005 movie 'Mangal Pandey' directed by Ketan Mehta and co-starring with Rani Mukerji and Amisha Patel.

In his personal life the actor has not been so fortunate. He married Reena Dutta against the wishes of his parents. The couple maintained a very low profile in their social life. They have two children. In 2005 this relationship ended in a divorce. The actor married Kiran Rao, one of the Assistant Director of Lagaan. The actor also had to face a legal battle for the custody of his brother Faisal.

These developments did not deter the actor. Aamir Khan delivered the next super hit, Rang De Basanti. It conveyed the message of fight against corruption. Aamir Khan was yet again given the Filmfare Best Actor Award. The Bollywood actor thereafter ventured into film direction and directed Taare Zamin Pe. This movie was icing on the cake. It gave such a strong message to the nation that it was declared Tax Free in a number of states. It won the Filmfare Best Director and the Best Movie award.

This great actor from Bollywood has been a bigger winner in his humility. He is known for not attending the glamourous awards ceremonies. He has refused an invitation for a wax replica being placed at Madame Tussauds.
