Bollywood Actress Aishwarya Rai
The face of an Angel with lovely green eyes and the smile of a fairy make Aishwarya Rai the most beautiful woman in the world. The story of the journey of this actress from the girl next door to one of the most famous women in the world is absolutely amazing. Aishwarya Rai was born in a traditional south Indian family on 1st Nov 1973 in Manglore, Karnataka. Her father Krishnaraj Rai is a marine biologist, and her mother Vrinda Rai is a writer. She belongs to Bunt community. Her parents moved to Mumbai after her birth. She went to the Arya Vidya Mandir High School in Mumbai and Ruparel College. She was always good in her studies and wanted to become an architect or study medicine. From her childhood she was a good performer. She trained as a classical dancer for five years which was to stand her in good stead. Having extra ordinary looks she started modeling part time. She never knew what future had in store for her. Her career in modeling was blooming in the early nineties. She got many advertisements from prestigious firms. She is best known for her Garden Ad and her commercial for Pepsi. Those were the days when beauty contests were gathering steam. She decided to participate in the Miss India contest in 1994. Little did she know then that she was about to script one of the greatest success stories in the world. Aishwarya Rai was a hot favourite for the Miss India contest. But in a very close finish Sushmita Sen piped her to the post to win the competition. Aishwarya Rai was the runner up and India’s entry to the Miss World contest. In an equally challenging pageant she won Miss World Title at Sun City. She returned to a glorious welcome at home. The Miss World title gave Aishwarya Rai a lot of fame. However at that point in time there was a feeling in Bollywood that acting was not the cup of tea of models. Aishwarya Rai made her debut in Iruvar, a Tamil film by Mani Ratnam. The actress made her first appearance in Bollywood in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. The movie did not succeed commercially. Another tamil film, Jeans was a huge hit in the south. The actress earned the Filmfare Best Actress Award South for the movie. Her first major success in Bollywood was in 1999 with Salman Khan. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a lovely movie in which the pair of Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan clicked with the audience. For her stellar performance in the film Aishwarya Rai was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award. This was closely followed by Taal co-starring with actor Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Amrish Puri and Alok Nath and the film was directed by non other than Subhash Ghai. This musical hit was very well appreciated. The songs of this movie caught national attention. Aishwarya Rai was nominated for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards for her performances in Taal. Two hit films Mohabbatein(co-starring with Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Jugal Hansraj, Uday Chopra, Shammita Shetty, Jimmy Shergill, Kim Sharma and more ) and Josh saw her in a supporting role. However her biggest hit was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's lavish extravaganza Devdas with superstars Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. This movie also had a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. For her role in Devdas she won her second Filmfare Best Actress Award. By now she was an ambassador for India. She was featured on the cover of the Time magazine in 2004 as one amongst the World's 100 Most Influential People. Aishwarya Rai was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. She then appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. While her international image was being built up she became a household name with the item number song Kajra Re in Bunty Aur Babli . Then came Dhoom 2 which had a controversial kiss with Hrithik Roshan. Guru with Abhishek Bachchan was a super hit in 2007 which seems to ideally coincide with her marriage to the actor. Her personal life too has been equally eventful. She had a long romance with Salman Khan which ended into acrimony. She was rumoured to be contemplating marrying the Hotmail Owner Sabeer Bhatia. She had also sued the magazine Star and Style for publishing reports about a romance with Akshay Kumar. After another romantic stint with Vivek Oberoi she finally married Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007, in one of the most hyped marriages in Bollywood. After her marriage she returned with Jodhaa Akbar which has been a great success at the box office. Aishwarya Rai is one of the most popular internet persons with over 17,000 websites dedicated to her. She has been immortalized in the Madame Tussauds Museum in London. Aishwarya Rai has also distinguished herself by donating her eyes. Indeed she is one of the greatest heroines of Bollywood till date.
