Actor Akshay Kumar
This Bollywood actor personifies the reel life story of a guy next
door who makes it big in the Bollywood. From the by lanes of Chandni
Chowk in Delhi, where he was brought up, this actor has reached dizzying
heights in his Bollywood career.
Akshay Kumar's jorney to fame is as amazing as his movie stories.
He was born in an average family in Jallandhar in Punjab. He proved
himself as a performer in Sports and Acting in his school days. He
grew up in Punjab and Delhi before moving to Bangkok to learn Martial
Arts. He also worked as a chef in Bangkok. On return to India he settled
in Tinsel Town Mumbai and started a Martial Arts School. There he was
offered a modeling assignment which attracted him to this glamourous
profession. Along with modeling came a break in movies.
Akshay Kumar made his debut in Saugandh which was a non starter.
In 1992 he acted in Khilari which was an action thriller. It gave him
the platform to develop his image as a dashing stunts hero. Although
1993 proved to be luke warm he had two great hits in 1994, Main Khiladi
Tu Anari and Mohra. The song, Tu Cheez Badi hai Mast Mast, had the
whole nation singing along. In Yash Chopra's
Yeh Dillagi he played a romantic hero and received his first nominations
for the Best Actor Award. Akshay Kumar had arrived to stay and rise
to the top.
Later in the mid nineties he did the Khiladi Series which was a great
hit with the fans. In Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi he has acted with the legendary
Rekha. This movie also featured the WWE Superstar Undertaker in a stunt
scene with Akshay Kumar. This was certainly no mean achievement; acting
with one of the huge superstars of the US. Akshaye played a great supporting
role in Yash Chopra's huge hit Dil to
Pagal Hai. He received the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor
for this movie. By now Akshay Kumar was fully established as an actor
to reckon in Bollywood.
After Dil to Pagal Hai, Akshay Kumar had a relatively lean period.
His Khiladi series of movies started failing at the box office. In
this period his noteworthy films were Sangharsh and Jaanwar. The year
2000 was very successful for Akshay Kumar. Hera Pheri with Paresh
Rawal and Sunil Shetty was a comedy and super hit. Tabu played
the female actress role in Hera Pheri. It redefined Akshay Kumar's
image and showed that he could do meaningful roles besides stunts.
This was followed by Dhadkan which was a romantic thriller. The actor
displayed his numerous shades by winning the Filmfare Best Villain
Award for Ajnabee.
Akshay Kumar had by now become a bank guarantee at the box office.
Between 2002 and 2005 he did a number of movies. The comedies which
did well were Awara Paagal Deewana, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi(co-starring
with Salman Khan, Amrish
Puri, Kader Khan, Satish
Shah, Kapil Dev and more) directed by David
Dhawan and Garam Masala with actor John
Abraham. Another unusual film was Aitraz with Priyanka
Chopra. This film shot into fame for the scene where Priyanka Chopra
tries to overcome Akshay Kumar with her sexual advances and failing
in the same tries to force herself on him. The zenith of the actor's
career was yet to arrive. 2006 saw the launching of Phir Hera Pheri
which was again a big movie. Bhagam Bhag was a great comedy which was
enjoyed by the audiences.
2007 was the most successful year in the career of Akshay Kumar.
Very few people are aware that the box office collection of his movies
put together is higher than any of the Bollywood superstars. Namaste
London was a lovely movie with Katrina Kaif.
Akshay Kumar plays the Punjabi Munda who is determined to win over
the love of this NRI girl who has been forced to marry him. This movie
was a big hit. Other super hits were Heyy
Babyy (along with actor Fardeen Khan ),
Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Welcome at the end of the year. When the film pundits
took stock at the end of the year it was realized that this actor has
made bigger business that the great Shahrukh
Khan. His hit movie with Amitabh bachchan and Sushmita
Sen was Aankhen and another was Ek Rishtaa During his eventful career the actor has had a relatively stable
family life. In the earlier years he was associated with many actresses
like Raveena Tandon, Shilpa
Shetty and Priyanka Chopra. He
finally married and settled with Twinkle
Khanna, daughter of great actor Rajesh
Khanna. He has a son named Aarav. A tabloid had published reports
about trouble in his married life. The actor has sued this magazine
for spreading rumours irresponsibly.
Akshay Kumar has a number of movies lined up for 2008. Chandni Chowk
to China Town is to be watched which they say is based on the real
life of the actor. This star will deliver many more hits ahead. And
sure enough, he will have his fans coming out laughing from his movies
and his producers laughing to the banks.
