He was born to celerity parents Vinod Khanna, the dashing Bollywood hero of the yesteryears, and Geetanjali. No wonder Akshaye Khanna was groomed for Bollywood by his parents. It is said that he had not much of interest in academics but picked up martial arts at school. And Himalaya Putra was specially made by the father to launch his son. But that was the time when the actor emerged from the shadows of his father. Himalaya Putra failed at the box office. Success was just around the corner for Akshaye Khanna. J P Dutta made Border which was a big multistar movie. Made on the backdrop of an India Pakistan war, Akshaye Khanna played the role of a young officer. Akshaye Khanna really breathed life into the role and looked young, handsome and charming. He performed exceedingly well to get the Filmfare Award for the Best Debut. Border was a big hit at the box office. It also sent across a message of unity to the country.

After Border the career of the actor refused to maintain momentum. He acted in a few movies like Kudrat, Laawaris, and Mohabbat. All theses turned out to be mediocre movies and did not prove to be significant for the actor's career. The actor also failed to build a rapport with the media. His not being very popular with the media worked to his disadvantage.

Then Akshaye Khanna paired with Aishwarya Rai. The first movie 'Aa Ab Laut Chalein' was a moderate success. This was followed by the great musical hit Taal. Taal was a classical love story showing the divide in society on financial lines. Akshaye Khanna played the role of the son of a rich man from a city in love with a girl from a town played by Aishwarya Rai. The movie was a mega hit and lifted the veil of mediocrity form Akshaye Khanna's face. He personified the eternal lover to Bollywood fans.

During this phase Akshaye Khanna acted with all the leading ladies of Bollywood. He paired opposite senior actresses like Manisha Koirala, Sonali Bendre and Urmilla Matondkar and of course his pairing with Aishwarya Rai was a big hit. Closely on the heels of Taal came Dil Chahta Hai. Dil Chahta Hai was a beautiful story of three friends. Akshaye Khanna played the role of Sidharth who falls in love with a lady, Dimple Kapadia, who is much older than him. The emotions between close friends have been beautifully depicted in the movie. Akshaye Khanna played the aloof youngster who cares for his principles more than the society. This role provided substance to the story. The movie was a great hit and gave Akshaye Khanna his first award. He went on to win the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor. He won the hearts of the young generation with this movie.
