Bollywood Actor Amrish Puri

The late Amrish Puri’s full name is Amrish Lal Puri, born on 22nd June 1932 in the Punjab district of Nawanshehar that is quite close to the active city of Jalandhar. His father’s name is late Shri Lala Nihal Chand while his late mother’s name is Ved Kaur. He had 4 brothers and sisters in all. Two of his brothers also acted in the Bollywood film industry. The late Amrish Puri graduated from the BM College that is located in Shimla. When the young Amrish Puri landed in Bombay, he had in his pocket just about 100 rupees.
When he landed in Bombay he had for support his elder brother Madan Puri who was already acting in various Bollywood movies at that time doing villain kind of roles. His brother might have somehow arranged an audition for Amrish, but Amrish failed in it. He had to struggle thereafter for some time. He managed to find a job with ministry of labor and that’s how he started making his living in Bombay. However that did not sabotage his acting career, he would take time out and started taking part in stage shows at the renowned Prithiv Theater. He subsequently started tasting success in acting and that very success brought him the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979. Thereafter good things started happening to this wonderful actor. Success on the stage converted into him being offered roles in TV commercials and thereafter he finally started receiving offers for Bollywood movie roles for which he had come all the way to Bombay.
Amrish Puri has acted in over 400 movies, be it in his mother tongue Punjabi, Hindi, Tegulu, Tamil and even Hollywood films. Though he tasted success in all the forms of acting in regional films as well Bollywood film, his best work is undoubtedly in Bollywood movies, he has portrayed very character that might have been scripted in Bollywood during his time, be it a villain, father, uncle, police man, advocate, comedy, aged father you name and he would certainly have done it. And he is a type of actor who have acted with every indian actor and actress from old generation to new generation including Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff and more. His voice was so husky & successful that the dialogues that he would utter on the screen would instantly become hits among audiences that till they reached back home after the movie they would keep repeating the lines. One such famous dialogue that is a repeated even today is the one he said in the Bollywood film ‘Mr. India’(directed by Shekhar Kapur). He said ‘Mugambo Khush Hua’ and it has kept his audience ‘khush’ till date.
He started his acting career with the Bollywood movie ‘Prem Pujari’ that was his first release but is first Bollywood signing was the super hit movie ‘Reshma aur Shera’ which was released in the year 1971 and starred with the dashing Bollywood actor Feroz Khan along side Bollywood beauty icon and actressHema Malini. Thus started the journey of Amrish Puri wherein he has done many memorable roles. Well, one of the most popular roles that even today remains in people’s mind is the 1987 super hit ‘Mr. India’ starring Sridevi, Anil Kapoor and Satish Kaushik in the lead roles and the late Amrish Puri as the main villain who wants to take over India.
In the movie Anil Kapoor chances upon a watch that can make him completely invisible and Amrish Puri (Mugambo in the movie) wants it for him so that conquering India can become a reality. However good prevails over evil & Amrish Puri has to the bite the dust. Later in his career he shifted to acting in positive roles and who can forget his role in the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayage’ that was released in the year 1995 and directed by Aditya Chopra, starring Kajol and Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. The movie created box office history and is one of Bollywood biggest successes ever.
Amris Puri also appeared in the Tamil film Dalapathi (1991), directed by Mani Ratnam, opposite South Indian superstars Rajnikanth and Mammootty. After Dalapathi, Amrish Puri made his second and last appearance in the Rajinkanth's film "Baba" (2002) in which Amrish Puri played the role of an evil tantrik who helps politicians and other evil elements to succeed in their hideous schemes. In 2004 he acted in the famous movie 'Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo' along with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol. In the same year he gave another type of unique film based on wonders of a car titled "Taarzan: The Wonder Car" directed by the thriller duo Abbas-Mustan and co-starring with newcomer Vatsal Seth, Ayesha Takia and Ajay Devgan in a special appearance
He also had the opportunity to act in two famous Hollywood projects, one being the much-acclaimed ‘Gandhi’ released in 1982 and other being the Steven Spielberg directed – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. He was very fond of collecting hats. At the age of 72 he died in Mumbai in 2005 of brain hemorrhage.
