Bollywood Actor Anupam Kher

anupam kher

Anupam Kher was born on 7th March, 1955, in the Northern Indian hill station city of Shimla. He is truly an institute of Bollywood films. He is a very accomplished actor and has also acted in quite a few English language movies.

His Bollywood debut movie was 'Aagman', the movie hit the theaters in 1982. His next movie "Daddy" was in more than one way a defining movie of Indian Cinema . It not only made Anupam Kher's presence felt in Bollywood but it can be termed as a landmark movie in Bollywood genre. In the movie he plays the role of a father whose son expired while staying abroad. His son's ashes come back to India through the Indian Consulate and he wants them so that the ashes can be immersed into the holy river of the Ganga. But the well known red-tapes come to fore and he is made to run from pillar to post just to get his hands on his late son's ashes. He played the role like no one else could have. His acting caliber was proved beyond doubt and he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award.

Thereafter he played several roles both as a villain and as a comedian. During the initial part of his career his mainly played villainous roles and then at a later stage he proved is metal as a comedian too. One of his most unforgettable bad man roles came in the movie 'Karma' (along with Shakti kapoor) directed by showman director Subhash Ghai in 1986. In this movie his name is 'Dr. Dang', this name became quite well known and the movie was a big hit. Actor Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Naseeruddin Shah also played major role along with Dilip Kumar and Nutan in the film. Thereafter Anupam was rather type cast as a villain in most of his Bollywood movies. People thought of him to be a villain and so producers would always approach him with similar roles. Teezab is just another of the many movies in which he has acted as a villain. Parinda and Ram Lakhan are few of his other notable Bollywood movies of the 1980's.

Then came 'Daddy' along with Pooja Bhatt and directed by Mahesh Bhatt, a movie which he would be very proud of. It is still even today, some 20 years after it's release considered to be one of hisgreatest ever performances. This movie established beyond doubt that he was certainly one the finest actors to have graced Indian Cinema. His performance fetched him the National Film Award - Special Jury Award & Critics Award for Best Performance from Filmfare. Anupam Kher is just like Kader Khan and Satish Shah who have played different kind of roles in different movies.

In 2003, Anupam made his Bollywood directorial beginning with the movie "Om Jai Jagadish" & he is a producer too now. In 2005 he produced and acted in the movie Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara. This movie fetched him Best Actor Award at the Karachi International Film Festival. From 1991 to 1993, Anupam Kher received the Filmfare Award from best comedian. I think only a few actors can claim to have won in the comedy category of the same awards for 3 consecutive year, this is quite a feat and speaks volumes for an actor's versatility. The three movies for which he was awarded were, Lamhe in 1991, khel in 1992 and Darr 1993. Again in 1995 he won the same award for the blockbuster movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayeng starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. He must also be happy to act in hit movie by Karan Johar titled 'Kuch Kuch Hota hai'. In 1995 he also produced a movie titled "Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara" and also acted in the movie along with Urmila Matondkar and Prem Chopra. His most prominent English movies include "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Bride and Prejudice". His 2007 movie was Shakalaka Boom Boom starring Bobby Deol, Upen Patel, Celina Jaitley, Kangana Ranaut and Vijay Patil along with him. He also played extremely good role in Shola aur Shabnam directed by David Dhawan(co-starring with Govinda, Gulshan Grover, Mohnish Bahl and Alok Nath). He also was there in hit movie Bade Miyan Chote Miyan along with Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda.

Anupam Kher is a qualified actor and not like the other major stars of Bollywood who haven't been to an acting school to learn the art of acting. He underwent training at the prestigious National School of Drama and passed out in 1978. He went onto to become the school's director from 2001 to 2004. He has had the honor of being the chairman of the Indian Film Censor Board as well. Last year in 2007, Anupam has started a new production company jointly with his NSD batch mate and actor-director Satish Kaushik. For those who want to learn the finer aspects of acting, Anupam has opened his open acting school that imparts acting skills in a methodical manner.
