It had audiences weeping and then applauding it all the way and also giving it a standing ovation at the end of the movie. It’s a really sensitive movie that moves you right from the start to the end and is a true modern time classic. Its been rarely seen in this country that such a dramatized movie wins at the box office, but Black did exceptionally well at the box office too. The performances from Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan & Rani Mukerji are both exemplary. The movie own a record 11 Filmfare awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress & both critics award.
The story of the movie is centered on two people, one being Michelle McNally [Ayesha Kapur/Rani Mukerji], born to an Anglo-Indian family who live in Shimla. But when she is just 18 months old she turns mute, is completely blinded and is deaf too. A bright and intelligent girl, Michelle lives in a world of black silence with no way of reaching out. This frustrates the young girl because she yearns to communicate. And the frustration leads to mood swings. As a result, she becomes destructive and violent on several occasions. The other central character is Debraj Sahai [Amitabh Bachchan] is an eccentric. An alcoholic, he is dedicated to his profession of being a teacher to the deaf-blind. The principal of the school, an old friend, believes in his ability and sends him to the McNally house to teach Michelle. Debraj's arrival at the McNally home is far from auspicious, as he arrives drunk, angry and rude. On encountering Michelle, Debraj realizes that the only way to tackle her is to shock her, be aggressive at times and at the same time, be tender. Despites obstacles, Debraj succeeds and Michelle miraculously learns her first word - Ma. But this is just the beginning. There are several battles to be won.
Debraj Sahai wishes that one day he would train her enough to be able to attend college. Through his eager involvement, Michelle blossoms, grows, gives up her violence, even gets admitted in school with normal children. The years pass by, Michelle does not succeed in getting her graduation, and it is time for Debraj to bid adieu as he is having his own health problems. 12 years later, at the age of 40, Michelle does succeed in graduating in Arts. When she completes her graduation, she is called on stage to give her acceptance speech. She has some very emotional things to say about her struggle for learning. But then there is another twist to this movie; Debraj Sahai starts to suffer from Alzheimer. Now slowly he is losing it all and starts to forget all the names and then even words and is faced with a situation where all that he taught Michelle he has completely forgotten himself. He is in the same situation that Michelle was early in her life. This is a truly gripping story of the trials and tribulation of a handicapped person and who life is then an uphill task.
