Bollywood Film Director David Dhawan

He has become synonymous with comedy. The combination of David Dhawan, Govinda and Kader Khan means a very spicy Bollywood masala which the fans will drool over to eat. He has been the uncrowned king of Bollywood. So phenomenal has been his success that he has even had two movies being released on the same date.
David Dhawan was born with the name Rajendra Dhawan. It is believed that his then Jewish neighbours, gave him David as a pet name. His neighbours would not have realized the fame this child was going to garner in future. He is the alumina of the famous FTI – Film and Television Institute of India located in Pune. This is where he learnt the ropes of editing films.
David Dhawan’s tryst with Bollywood commenced right from the eighties. He entered the industry editing for the movie “Oh Bewafa” in 1984. Very few of us know that he has edited movies like Saaransh, Farishta, Souten and Saajan Ki Saheli in the early eighties. That is the time this great director got the pulse of Bollywood. Other prominent movies where he contributed was Naam in 1986. With Taaqatwar in 1989 he jumped into the fray as a full fledged director.
David Dhawan has successfully established his brand of movies which are non serious fun movies revolving around the family. He has also used the eternal Bollywood theme of look alikes and mistaken identities to make super hit movies. It is said that he wakes up early in the morning to think of the plot of his films. He develops his ideas and takes about two to three years to get them on screen. David Dhawan manages to garnish his movies with humour which is his trade mark.
After his debut film his major success was Bol Radha Bol in 1992. The movie starred Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla. It went on to be a big commercial success. His first movie with Govinda was Shola Aur Shabnam. The two were on the verge of creating history. David Dhawan formed a successful combination with Govinda to deliver as many as 17 movies. Most of them were comedies and super hits. The leading ladies were Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon and Juhi Chawla. Kader Khan was invariably a quintessential part of the movie. The most successful films of this series were Shola aur Shabnam in 1992(starring actor and actresses like Govinda, Divya Bharati, Gulshan Grover, Alok Nath, Mohnish Bahl, Anupam Kher and more), Aankhen in 1993, Raja Babu in 1994, Coolie Number 1 in 1995, Deewana Mastana in 1997 and the list goes on. After this came Hero No 1 and Jodi No 1, part of the No 1 series which became the trade mark of David Dhawan movies.
He also worked with Salman Khan in Judwa and Biwi No 1. Both the movies were super hit and also provided a platform to Salman Khan to develop his career. Biwi No 1 was a multistarrer with Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Tabu and Karishma Kapoor and was a mega hit. Another hit with Salman Khan was Judwaa. It uses the popular Twin Brothers theme which has been flogged by Bollywood time and again. Then came Bade Miyan Chote Miyan which saw the combination of Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. It is a comedy errors by two look alikes which was absolutely hilarious. David Dhawan managed to capture the best of both the actors. The movie went on to be a great hit and will be remembered for quite some time to come.
Another actor who has benefited from David Dhawan movies is Sanjay Dutt. This was the time when he was looking for an image transformation from the angry gangster to the sober homely man. David Dhawan provided him the platform for an image change. Famous movies made by the two were Chal Mere Bhai, Ek Aur Ek Gyarah , Jodi No.1 and Shaadi No. 1 which featured four heroes and heroines. Thus David Dhawan had by the turn of the century directed most of the leading Bollywood actors. David also gave chance to Katrina Kaif in his movie Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? also starring Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen . Satish Shah is also a prominent actor in David Dhawan movies.
What makes David Dhawan movies hit? This was the question the entire Bollywood was asking. The answer was very simple. Cinema is the cheapest form of entertainment and the movie fan goes to the movie hall to forget his problems for those three hours. David Dhawan exactly capitalized on this need of the fans and provided an escape into fantasy to his audience. He also believed in delivering movies in quick succession rather than sitting on projects for years. Thus he believed in numbers and simple humour. He did get into controversy by either the ambiguous script on screen or gestures of his actors which on occasions were close to obscene. He is happily married with two children. Recently he has delivered Partner which was a super hit. Tom and Jerry/Partner 2 is in the making. Be prepared to laugh again.
