Devdatt Pishorimal Anand simply known as Dev Anand, a legendary Indian Bollywood actor and film producer was born on September 26, 1923 in Gurdaspur, undivided Punjab to a family of advocate, Pishorimal Anand. The elder brother, Chetan Anand and younger brother Vijay Anand of Dev Anand were film Directors in Bollywood. This handsome and elegant actor completed his graduation in English Literature from Govt. College, Lahore. He was very found of acting so he left his hometown and moved to the center of film industry, Mumbai.
Career
Dev Anand started his career in military censor office, Mumbai for Rs. 160. But soon he was offered to act in Hum Ek Hain by Parbhat Talkies in 1946. He was offered by his favorite star, Ashok Kumar which proved a good chance for his career. He played lead role in Ziddi opposite Kamini Kaushal in 1948 under the banner of Bombay Talkies production. This film was a success and then Dev turned into producer. Dev launched his own production company, Navketan in 1949. Dev produced a crime thriller movie, Bazzi in 1951; his friend Guru Dutt directed it. This film was a success and Dev became a true star. Dev played a variety of roles in his films such as Jaal, Rahee and Aandhiyan. Taxi Driver was a success on box office and his heroine, Kalpana Kartik whom Dev decided to marry.
His style of dialogue delivery, nodding while speaking and wearing hats became very popular in those days. Inspite of his marriage and birth of son, Suneil he performed outstandingly in many other successful movies in 1950s. In 1958 he won Best Actor Award for the film, Kala Pani. Dev was involved with singer and actress Suraiya romantically and they performed in six movies together. Dev Anand saved her from drowning in an accident during shooting so she fell in love with him. Her grandmother does not like her relationship with Dev Anand so Suraiya remained unmarried.
Dev Anand performed in Guide with Waheeda Rehman which was based on a novel of R.K.Narayan. An Indo-US co-production was released in 1965 which was shot in Hindi and English simultaneously with the efforts of Dev Anand. It is considered his best work. Guide was directed by his younger brother Vijay Anand in which Dev Anand performed stunningly with Waheeda. It was a creative movie by Dev as an actor and his younger brother as a director. Dev Anand and Vijay Anand’s next hit movie was Johnny Mera Naam which was released in 1970. Dev remained popular as a romantic hero in 1970s but Raj and Dilip Kumar began to slow down. He directed a drama Prem Pujari which was flopped. In 1971 he directed Hare Rama Hare Krishna and in the same year performed with Mumtaz in Tere Mere Sapne and The Citadel. He introduced Zeenat
Aman in Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Tina Munim in Des Pardes who performed well.
Dev Anand was an actor and filmmaker who was well aware of the political situation of the country. At that time when the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi imposed internal emergency he led a group of Bollywood celebrities against it. He actively participated in this campaign against the emergency in the elections of 1977.
Dev Anand’s films are famous for their social topics and he himself says that his films represent his personal views. His films are also known for popular songs. He produced very charming and hit songs in collaboration with O. P. Nayyar, Sachin Dev Burman and his son Rahul Dev Burman. At the birthday of this great celebrity in September 2007 his autobiography was released in the presence of Indian Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Awards and Honours
Dev Anand spent his life for Bollywood film industry. In the course of his profession he won many awards, honors and recognitions. He received Filmfare Best Actor Award for Munimji and Kala Pani in 1955 and 1958 respectively. He was nominated for Filmfare Best Actor Award for Love Marriage in 1959, Kala Bazar in 1960 and Hum Dono in 1961. He was the winner of Filmfare Best Actor Award and Filmfare Best Film Award for Guide in 1966. In 1991 he won Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dev Anand also won many national awards, honors and recognitions. He received Star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, Mumbai Academy of Moving Images Award for his Services to Bollywood Film Industry in 1997, Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, and Mega Movie Maestro of the Millennium in 2000. He received Padma Bhushan Award from the Government of India in 2001, Evergreen Star of the Millennium and Special Screen Award in 2001. He received Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, Legend of Indian Cinema and Living Legend Award in 2004, Sony Golden Glory Award in 2005, ANR Award in 2006, Glory of India Award in 2006, Punjab Ratan in 2007 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
Dev Anand is well recognized at national and international level. He received award for his outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema in July 2000 from the First Lady of the United States of America. In the same year he received Star of the Millennium Award in California. He was honored by Donna Ferrar withy “New York State Assembly Citation" for his contribution to Art of acting, production and direction. Government of Nepal also awarded a "Special National Film Award" in 2005 at first national film festival.
