Bollywood Movie Eklavya
Eklavya: The Royal Guard is a Bollywood movie directed & produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra who has also directed movies like Parinda & Mission Kashmir. This movie is a multi-starrer movie and included the likes of Bollywood superstar Amithabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sharmila Tagore, Vidya Balan, Sanjay Dutt, Rima Sen, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Shergill and Boman Irani. This movie also happened to be India’s official entry to the Oscar’s for 2007 completing in the Best Foreign Film category. This line-up of such great acting war houses is reason enough for a movie to do well at the box office but Eklavya did even more brilliantly at the box office and even internationally were the movie was appreciated by the likes of Robert L. Friedman, the former President of Columbia Pictures and AMC Theaters, that’s not all the producer of the Harry Potter films, Mr. Lionel Wigram has termed it a masterpiece worthy of winning India an Ocsar. In the US it opened to one of the best opening that has ever been witnessed by a Bollywood film.
The movie is set in modern day India, but everything else about the movie is telling an old story of past dyanties that rules this country. Eklavya (Amithabh Bachchan) is the royal guard whose job is to protect the fort, the king and the king’s dynasty. This has been the job of Eklavya’s family for the past nine generations. Eklavya is the centrifugal point of the whole film and he happens to be a great marksman and is famous all over for his accuracy. But as he is growing olders his accuracy is on the decline and having been around for so long he knows almost every sercet that surounds this fort.
There is a young prince in Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan) who due because the traditional unchanging customs of this place has since a long time stayed in London but due to the untimely death of his mother Queen Rani Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore), he has to hurried come back home. His home return bring great amount of joy to both is sister Princess Nandini (Raima Sen) and his childhood love Rajjo (Vidya Balan) Harshwardhan’s father, the King Rana Jaywardhan (Boman Irani), influenced by his brother, Rana Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff), supports the atrocities being forced upon the helpless peasants. But the other royals are misleding the King and are looking for opportunities to settle old scores against one another and therefore one of them sends a threatening phone call to the King. An irreverent police officer, Pannalal Chohar (Sanjay Dutt), is called in to investigate.
Harshwardhan is confronted with intriguing family secrets, conspiracies, deceptions, murder plots and confusion. A family skeleton is revealed which if made public could shake the very roots of the Harshwardhan dynasty. This is followed with murders, deaths and bloodshed for money; revenge; or dharma/duty! Bullets are fired all across and all the royals are plotting to kill the other one and Eklavya is left consider that how should justice be met out to other no obeying the traditions of the dynasty. There are some loosely held secrets that are coming to the fore and Harshwardhan gets the feeling that he is the son of Eklavya but is not sure of it either. Eklavya is all the time now trying to protect Harshwardhan as he remains the heir to the throne. Pannalal Chohar in the mean time is trying to fulfill is duty of protecting the royals but he has a particular shoft corner for Eklavya and wants to make sure that Eklavya is not caught in the cross fire of the fighting of the royals. In the end of it all good wins over evils and dharma is the winner. Harshwardhan also gets to know that Eklavya is his father.
