Ekta Kapoor

Ekta Kapoor

Ekta Kapoor born on 7th June, 1975 is the creative head of Balaji Telefilms. Her father is Bollywood actor Jeetendra and her mother’s name is Shobha Kapoor. Her brother is Bollywood actor Tusshar Kapoor. Ekta has done her schooling from Bombay Scottish School and went on to get admission in Mithibai College. Ekta wasn’t a keen student and would always be disinterested in studies. Seeing this, her father advised her that she take up some work in the entertainment industry, she took the advice seriously and started her own TV serial production company at the age of just nineteen.

In a matter of few years she changed the face of Indian television completely. Her dynamism and her enterprising outlook helped her form a company that literally churned out hit soap operas by the week. Today she is 32 years old and what she has achieved is something that other TV production houses can just imagine to achieve or achieve in an entire life span. Her production house is ‘Balaji Telefilms’ where she has assumed the role of creative director in pursuit of achieving star like success. She just doesn’t distribute her serials to Star Plus a leading Indian entertainment channel which can also be termed as her pet channel. Pet channel because, at any time of the week at least 4 serials of her are on air. But it’s just not Star Plus that’s airing her serials; all of India’s leading satellite TV channels like Sony Entertainment Television, Zee TV, SAB TV and 9X to name a few have her serials either aired on prime time or at a very convenient slot.

Her entrepreneurship skills are best understood by the fact that she has never rested on her laurels, she has reinvented herself time and again and even not put her ego in between when it came to co-producing TV series. When success was at her feet and things were going smoothly she again tried to do something that she had never tried before. She ventured into filmmaking production which involves huge amount of money & financing these days and for a TV production house it would mean using the budget of few months of serial making. At a time there are nearly 20-25 serial that are being shoot for her production house ‘Balaji Telefilms’. And all of these 20-25 serial are being aired on various satellite TV channels. On an average her TV serials are shown for 4 days of out the 7 days in a week.

Her most successful and also her longest running TV serial is ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’. This serial was for the 1st time aired on the satellite TV channel Star Plus in 2000. Since then it has been continuously aired week after week and year after year. There are no seasons breaks in the Indian television scene as supposed to yearly seasons break in the US and European TV serial productions. When ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ aired on the TV screens it was an instant hit and its TRP ratings zoomed sky high and even today after eight years of programming it is still amongst the top rated programs on Indian Television. Some of the other prominent TV serials that Ekta Kapoor has made are Kkusum, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kasam Se, Kahin Kisii Roz and Kasautii Zindagi Ki. Yes the similarity is very much apparent, most of her serials and movies that she has produced start with the letter ‘K’; she considers the letter ‘K’ to be her lucky charm.

She has also produced 5 Bollywood movies but just one out of them ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum’ starring Tushar Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Isha Koppikar and Neha Dhupia proved to be successful. Recently released movie ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ made by White Feather Films was co-produced by Ekta Kapoor. This movie too was successful. In 2001 Ekta Kapoor was awarded the Startup Entrepreneur of the Year award by Ernst & Young for her achievements and entrepreneurship skills.
