Bollywood film director Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar was born on 9th of January 1974. His family is an eminent Bollywood family. His father is the noted and revered scriptwriter, lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar while his mother is the renowned screenplay writer Honey Irani. Farhan’s step mother is the Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi. With so many people within his family for inspiration, Farhan too like his parents wanted to become a writer. This urge to become a writer grew so large that one day he dropped out of college and started pursuing his dreams. For nearly two years he did nothing but watched movies and tried to make contact with the movies he saw.
The next step towards becoming a director was to start assisting directors to learn the difficult art of film direction. He got his break when director Pankaj Parshar allowed Farhan to work as his assistant director in the movie ‘Himalayputra’ which was actor Akshaye Khanna’s debut film. During the same period Farhan also work with a TV software production company named – Script Shop for 3 long years.
His Bollywood background might surely have helped him in more than one way to make in roads into Bollywood film direction but from his very first movie that he directed made it very clear that he was not here to make the run of the mill Bollywood masala movies. He showed ample proof in his directorial debut ‘Dil Chata Hai’ that his heart wanted to make cinema the way the people of young and vibrant India would like to see their cinema being made. Dil Chata Hai was a multi-starrer movie; the likes of Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Dimple Kapadia were the lead actors and actresses of the movie. The movie is such a fresh idea that even today when you sit down and watch the movie you certainly identify with it and say these were the same things that we did during our college lives.
The story shows 3 college friends who grow up doing all things together, they share their lives practically with each other, they make the trip to Goa in Aamir’s Mercedes Benz together, and everything is cool together. But as time passes, lives take a different path with turn of events making the hearts have a different feeling for each other. Saif is always on the look out for pretty girls; Akshaye falls in love with an older aged woman play by Dimple Kapadia and Aamir starts taking complete care of the family run business. But when it seems that the sand is slipping for good from their hands they manage to reunite and forget their grievances. The movie turned out to be a smash hit and announced the arrival of a young new director in Bollywood cinema who had the courage to make cinema irrespective of its mass appeal or not.
Thereafter he directed the movie ‘Lakshya’ starring Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan along side his favorite actress Preity Zinta. The movie is about a carefree boy studying in college and like a girl played by Preity Zinta. He is cool, affable and smart too. But she Preity asks him on what he plans to do in life his response is quite naïve because he has no objective to attain in life. Soon when college ends they separate and course their paths in life. Somehow Hrithik is able to join the army and becomes one of the best officers in the Indian Army. The story was well accepted but couldn’t rake in the mohola at the box office despite winning all round applause.
Then came the blockbuster that elevated Farhan’s status as one of the best directors in Bollywood currently. He made a remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan movie titled – Don. Farhan’s movie is titled Don: The Chase Begins Again and stars Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan along with Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles. The movie turned out to be a blockbuster and his work was being appreciated from all corners of the film industry. In 2006, Farhan produced the movie ‘Honey Moon Travels Pvt. Ltd.’ That also met with success though only moderate.
