Bollywood Actor Govinda

He is the hero of the Common Man. Known as Virar ka Chora (Boy) this loving Bollywood actor has enthralled audiences with his trade mark humour for more than two decades. He has managed to carve a niche for himself in the amazing world of Bollywood.
He was born in a Punjabi family. His father was a small time producer and mother a classical singer. His father could never make it big and the family fell on hard times. They had to even shift to Virar, a locality on the outskirts of Mumbai. Govinda did his schooling from a local school and was denied a job in a hotel as he could not speak good English. His father suggested him to act in films. The actor had then just seen John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever and was deeply influenced by him. Govinda got into making television commercials and made a beginning. His first film was Love 86. The hero of the common man had arrived.
Fortunately for the actor his first film Ilzam was a box office hit. Love 86 also went on to be a hit and Govinda had a string of successes like Khudgarz, Hatya, Jeete Hain Shan Se and Hum in 1991. His first film with David Dhawan was Taaqatwar.
This was a time when audiences were very keen to watch light comedies which entertained you and sent you laughing out from the movie halls. Govinda and David Dhawan arrived at the right formula. To cast opposite Govinda two Bollywood beauties Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon proved to be the right choice. Shola Aur Shabnam and Ankhein came first followed by Raja Babu. Coolie No 1 Hero No 1 and Jodi No 1 all proved to be mega hits. The common masses developed an appeal for this simple village boy who came from a village and made it big in a city. In all, 17 hits were delivered by the combination of David Dhawan and Govinda. While all this was happening the audience had accepted these all nonsense no tension movies as a trade mark of Govinda. 1998 saw Govinda combining with Amitabh Bachchan to produce Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan with David Dhawan. This movie was a great comedy and went well with the masses. The actor went on to win a Filmfare Award for his performance in Haseena Man Jayegi. Very few people are aware that one of the Govinda movies, Saajan Chale Sasural(starring Govinda himself, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Kader Khan and Satish Kaushik), has been released in French language also. He also played a major role along with actor Sanjay Dutt in the fim "Ek Aur Ek Gyarah" by comedic writer David Dhawan. He also acted in David Dhawan's 'Shola aur Shabnam' co-starring with Divya Bharati, Gulshan Grover, Alok Nath, Mohnish Bahl, Anupam Kher and many others.
A question often asked is how did Govinda manage to appeal the audiences? The answer is very simple. The on screen Govinda was never a business tycoon but always a simple Coolie, a rickshaw driver or a simple farmer from rural area. He always took part in the festivals of the common man like Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi and Durga Puja. Thus the common man saw an image of himself on the reel and loved the character more than any other heros earlier. This is how Govinda always had a fan following of the common masses. It is this image of his which also contributed to his success in elections. He was elected as a Member of the Parliament from the Mumbai North constituency. This image of the actor was also used by Farah Khan in the film Om Shanti Om where she recreates the era of the seventies and the aspiring hero is called Om Prakash Makhija. The Govinda brand had by now made a permanent impression with the audiences. Hadh Kar Di Aapne was a musical comedy with Rani Mukerji. He also acted in film "Andaz Apna Apna" along with Aamir Khan which was nominated for Filmfare Awards 1995 in four categories. He also played a major role in 2007 movie Partner co-starring with Salman Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif. Another of his movie in 2007 'Salam-E-Ishq also couldn't do well in the box office.
The actor has had minor hiccups in personal life. He always wanted to marry his co star Neelam. But due to his family pressures he could not go ahead and had to enter in matrimony with his present wife Sunita. The actor is happily married now and has two children. He was also lucky to escape a car accident with minor injuries while shooting for Khuddar. It is said that although he was bleeding the actor did not cancel his shooting for that day and kept his commitment after taking medical aid.
Like all other Bollywood actors Govinda has got into trouble after joining politics. He was elected with a thumping majority from the North Mumbai constituency. He has been criticised for his performance as a MP. He is alleged of not having done anything for welfare of poor people. He got into controversy over running dance bars in the city. He is known to have been in accessible to the people of his constituency. Due to these problems it is learnt that Govinda has decided to quit politics.
This actor has been sited for his work by the British Broadcasting Corporation. He will continue to entertain us for quite some time to come.
