Bollywood Actor Jeetendra

Jeetendra

Jeetendra’s real name is Ravi Kapoor and he was born in Mumbai, India on 7th April 1942. He is also the father of new generation actor Tusshar Kapoor and television serial maker lady Ekta Kapoor. His family was in the trade of making and supplying imitation jewelry in the city on Mumbai. They also supplied the same kind of Jewelry for use in films. On one such supply Jeetendra himself went to supply the jewelry to director V. Shantaram. On his visit the famous director asked him, would he be interested in acting his current movie for which he ordered the jewelry, to this Jeetendra had no hesitation.

Thus started the journey of an actor despite never receiving critical acclaim for his acting he acted in scores of successful Bollywood movies and other regional language movies, dancing and singing and fighting the bad guys like also being a good son in many movies. His first movie, ‘Navrang’ that was directed by V. Shantaram, he played the role of acting at the double for Sandhya and it was released in 1959. He didn’t get much recognition for his role as he was acting on the part of an actress. Then a few years later he was first cast as a lead actor by Mr. V. Shantaram in the Bollywood film ‘Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne’ that was released in 1964. But though he was cast as an actor he was yet to prove his metal as an actor and good abilities. Obviously he as an actor was looking for the right moment to come his way so that he can show his acting talents as well.

He had to wait another 3 years for the big break to come his way. And the defining moment came in 1967 when Mr. Ravikant Nagaich made the flick ‘Farz’. This movie proved to be the first super hit movie of his career and brought him more success when it became a golden jubilee hit. It is in this movie’s song ‘Maast Baharon Ka Main Aashiq’ where Jeetendra for the 1st time ever wore a white T-shirt and a white pair of shoes. Later the white shoes became the trademark of Jeetendra. Jeetendra has starred in over 250 films that is a Bollywood record. Only the great Bollywood actor Dharmendra has starred in such high number of movies. Amitabh Bachchan is next.

Another feature of Jeetendra’s acting was his dancing style; he has always been so energetic that it could put to shame most of the crop of actor who claim to be good dancers themselves. Indeed there can be no comparison as the styles are completely different and good there is technique to dance which wasn’t case then. Jeetendra used to dance so energetically that he would be jumping up & down on most occasions and therefore the got the nickname of – Jumping Jack.

Fraz was followed by many movies showing him in great dancing styles, for instance Humjoli released in 1970 and Caravan released 1971 are great examples of his wonderful dancing abilities. Jeetendra has had the chance to actor with all the leading actresses of his time and was successfully paired with actresses like Rekha, Jaya Prada, Hema Malini & Sridevi on numerous occasions along with Prem Chopra, Kader Khan, Gulshan Grover, Shakti Kapoor as villian. He also did many films co-starring with Shatrughan Sinha Although it is true that Jeetendra never acted in some of the really critically acclaimed Bollywood flicks like ‘Sholay’, ‘Deewar’, ‘Mother India’, ‘Pakeeza’ and other really excellently made epic movies, but that does not take away from his the credit of being a successful actor. He had a different audience, his audience would be the front benchers of the movie halls, who would whistle loudly in cheer and scream in appreciation.

When you look at him today he comes across a thorough gentleman. Always wearing proper attire and looking as handsome as he ever did. The smile is there and so is the charm. He is truly a masses actor in a class of his own.
