Bollywood film director and producer J.P. Dutta.

J.P. Dutta

J.P. Dutta was born on 3rd October 1949 in Bombay, India. J.P. Dutta’s full name is Jyoti Prakash Dutta. J.P. Dutta’s father, Mr. O.P. Dutta has been a noted Bollywood film director and writer. J.P. is married two Bollywood actress Bindiya Goswami and has to daughters from his marriage. Since many years Mr. O.P. Dutta has been writing the dialogues for J.P. Dutta’s film.

J.P. Dutta is himself a versatile person and his interests’ range from film direction to production and even sometimes writes the story of his movies. His capabilities also extend to the areas of film edition, he has done the screenplay for his movies like ‘Border’, ‘Loc: Kargil’ and most recently ‘Umrao Jaan’. Most of the Bollywood movies that J.P. makes are of action genre and the patriotic theme seems to get the best out of him.

J.P. Dutta started out his career in Bollywood film direction in the year 1985 with ‘Ghulami’. The movie starred Bollywood action hero Dharmendra, Naseeruddin Shah and Mithun Chakraborty in the lead roles. The movie is a classic about feudal Rajasthan.

In 1993, J.P. directed a film on royal families who are at loggerheads with each other and the hatred is so much that it’s a blood bath waiting to happen all the time. This movie is a multi-starrer Bollywood movie starring as many as 10 odd major Bollywood actors and actresses. Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Vinnod Khanna, Sunny Deol, Meenakshi Seshadri, Raveena Tandon, Divya Bharti and Kabir Bedi are all part of this stellar star cast. The movie shows that while the older generation is busy fighting with each other on the murder of a royal family head elsewhere in England the children of the two royal families are falling in love with each other. But once they come back to their respective hometowns and become mindful of the fact that which royal families they belong to it escalates into a bloody war. However sanity prevails and the end is a happy one.

Thereafter J.P. Dutta directed the epic Bollywood war film ‘Border’ based on the Indo-Pak of 1971 and took the events of the battle of Longewala as it’s theme. The movie’s star cast includes Bollywood action hero Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna and Jackie Shroff. The movie is more or less an adaptation of the 1971 war events but not all the incidents shown in the movie are true. For instance while the movie showed many soldiers being killed, just two military forces were actually killed in the war.

It shows in picture that how a small group of about 120 soldiers of the Indian armed forces hold on to their post successful against the might of a full Tank Regiment of the Pakistani Army. The Indian army was successful to hold their post until the Indian Air Force jets reached to help and thawed the Pakistani force back. This movie was a blockbuster and raised the patriotic sentiments of the entire nation. The movie won many awards including the Filmfare award for Best Director (J.P. Dutta), Best Film, Best New Comer (Akshaye Khanna) and Best Supporting Actor (Sunil Shetty).

Following this J.P. Dutta made another attempt of create another war epic in ‘Loc: Kargil’. This Bollywood movie too was based on the Indo-Pak battle of Kargil in 1999. This battle did not escalate into a full-blown war but again it was the Pakistani forces that invaded Indian Territory. This time he used an even bigger star cast including many indian actors like Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Akshaye Khanna, Manoj Bajpai, Mohnish Bahl and there were many actresses also in this movie like Rani Mukerji, Raveena Tandon, Kareena Kapoor, Mahima Chaudhry, Esha Deol, Isha Koppikar and more but unfortunately the out come was not the same. For his last released movie J.P. Dutta in a long time chose to differ from the path of action and war theme to a romantic theme. His choice this time was the epic love story of ‘Umrao Jaan’. He chose the beautiful Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai to play the central character’s role and cast Abhishek Bachchan to star opposite to her. The movie had great hype prior to release but on release it didn’t live up to expectation.
