Actress Karisma Kapoor
Karisma Kapoor, nick name Lolo is the eldest daughter of Randhir
Kapoor and Babita Kapoor. She was born on June 25th 1974 in Mumbai.
Her family, the Kapoor family has the distinction of being the longest
serving family in Bollywood. Prithviraj Kapoor a legend of Indian
Cinema was Karisma’s great grandfather, Raj Kapoor Karisma’s grandfather
was the superstar of new India and his movies were of the most brilliantly
made ever. Her uncles Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor too were stars
in their own right. Rishi Kapoor is
the paternal uncle of Karisma Kapoor who inspired her a lot. In the
Kapoor family females were debarred from acting in Bollywood and
for that same reason her mother Babita and aunt Neetu had to put
a stop at the flourishing career after marriage. Karisma however
broke tradition and was the first girl from a Kapoor family to act
in Hindi movies.
Karisma’s primary schooling started with her getting enrolled into
the "CATHEDRAL and JOHN CONNAN HIGH SCHOOL" at Fort – Bombay and studied
there until the age of six. She completed her CBSE further and thereafter
joined "SOPHI COLLEGE for FYJC" in arts stream, later she quit her
education field towards the end of term of collage to leap forge to
try her luck in main stream Bollywood movies. At an early age of 17
she left her education and broke Kapoor family traditions to start
a acting career that would later on become very successful.
As soon as we hear the name Karisma Kapoor we think of a blue eye
beauty who initially couldn’t act well but later on her glamorous roles
in director David Dhawan’s many movies established her as one the country’s
most successful and popular actresses of the 90’s. Though her acting
abilities never on the forefront of things in the initial part of her
career but gradually with time once she established herself as a successful
actor she gambled with different roles to prove she is no mug when
it comes to acting skills.
She started her film journey with Perm Qaidi, which met with moderate
success, but her subsequent movies fared poorly at the box office.
Films like Jaagruti, Nishchay, Deedar and Muqabla all bombed at the
box office but movies like Jigar in 92, Raja Babu in 94, Anari in 93
,Coolie No.1 in 95, Jeet in 1996 and Chal
Mere Bhai in 2000 fared well at the box office, all the these movies
just kept her afloat in the film industry and Coolie No.1 in particular
proved to be a major success for her. With the movie (Coolie
No.1) started the immensely successful partnership of the trio – Govinda,
Karisma Kapoor and director David Dhawan.
These three hit upon a formula to produce what can be termed as malasa
movies, these movies didn’t have a script that could be called original
or brilliant that what it had was comedy enough to entertain the masses
and give audiences their money’s worth. Movies like Raja babu, Coolie
No.1, Biwi No.1 and Hero No.1 all made by David Dhawan and having the
No.1 in the title proved to the their lucky charm as all of these movies
turned out to be super hits and established Karisma Kapoor as a very
successful and glamorous actress in Bollywood.
She also was a part of some really prestigious projects and worked
with the big banners and productions houses. In 1996 she starred in
Dharmesh Dharshan’s Raja Hindustani, her co-star was Aamir
Khan and the movie was about a girl rich falling in love with the
average village boy and then the difference of the two world’s – the
rich & the poor. In this movie she shared a smooch with Aamir and became
the most watch kiss scene in a long time. Her acting power ness in
the movie landed her the Filmfare award for Best Actress. Next year,
the movie Dil To Pagal Hai opposite Shahrukh
Khan was another silver lining in her glittering career. Her role
fetched her Filmfare award for best supporting actress. She also did a hit movie along with Amitabh Bachchan named Ek
Rishtaa. She also was
part of the Rajshri Productions movie ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ (starring Salman
Khan, actress Karisma Kapoor herself, actor Saif
Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Mohnish
Behl and Tabu.) which also was a major success.
In October of 2002 she announced her engagement to Abhishek
Bachchan the son the country’s most popular actor Amitabh
Bachchan, it became the most talked about engagement in whole
country but within just four months of the engagement they announced
their breakup. Karisma later went on to marry Sanjay Kapur. They
two had a well-publicized differences post marriage but today everything
is merry between the two and they have a lovely daughter as well.
She is definitely looking to make a comeback to Bollywood, as we
will soon see her on the silver screen.
