Bollywood movie Khamoshi The Musical
Khamoshi: The Musical is the Bollywood directorial debut movie of noted filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali that was released in the year 1996. The movie was produced by Sibte Hassan Rizvi while the music for the movie has been given by Jatin-Lalit. The movie starred a versatile lineup of actors such Salman Khan, Nana Patekar, Manisha Koirala, Seema Biswas & Helen. The movie was awarded the Filmfare critics award for best movie and also landed actress Manisha Koirala the critics best actress award.
The movie is set in the beautiful backdrop of Goa where Joseph Brenganza (Nana Patekar) and his wife Flavy (Seema Biswas) happen to be both deaf and mute and are devout Catholics. They make a living out of selling soap bars by the way of door to door marketing. Then Flavy gets pregnant and gives birth to a daughter who they name Annie (Manisha
Koirala) and their happiness is fulfilled when their daughter can both speak and listen. Life is a happy one when they soon have a new addition their family with the birth of a baby boy who too can both speak and listen. Annie’s world is divided into 2 half’s, the one half is that of having to live with deaf & mute parents who love her immensely and the other half is her love for music.
A couple of years later, their son Sam by accident passes away, now the Brenganza family is felt feeling highly undone by their faith in god and Joseph completely loses faith. The family also then finds it hard to make a living out of selling of soaps and thus Joseph starts a business of manufacturing toys and it is through this business that the family flourishes. The impact of the death of Sam on Annie’s life is that with her father starting a new business and she being the only child she was thrust with a load of responsibilities due which Annie couldn’t continue her zeal for music and her hobby of singing gradually fades away into the sunset.
But when Annie grows up she finds a friend in Raj (Salman Khan) who keeps getting closer to her after each meeting between the two and Annie then again finds music as the one thing that she would enjoy when she is not with Raj. Joseph Brenganza and Flavy are very happy to see that Annie is after a long period of time is enjoying music once again. It Raj who tells her that if she is enjoying music or trying to lead a life of her own then she is not betraying her parents in any way, Annie starts loving Raj and the feeling is mutual. One day they happen to send a night together and as a consequence she gets pregnant which is greatly opposed by her father. Joseph tells Annie that she drop the baby and forget Raj. Joseph dislikes Raj, mainly because he is Hindu, is able to speak and hear, not a resident of Goa, and the fear of losing Annie forever and thus their contact with the world. But Annie refuses to abort the child and as a consequence has to face the ire of her father who asks her to leave the family home. At the same time Raj has to leave Goa without telling Annie of the same and Joseph tells her that he has deserted her and will not come back. But Raj does come back he brings his parents along to talk to Annie’s parents about their relationship.
At the first meeting Raj’s parent do not like Joseph & Flavy’s living style but Raj is able to convince them about his love for Annie. Despite all odds Raj & Annie get married and have a baby boy too.
