Naxalites have a strong and staunch rule that those who join their movement and mission cannot leave the movement at any time of their life. It is not known why he join their cause but due to his brother’s death in a freakish accident he had a change of heart and returned back to his family. The fact that he left the naxalite cause and went on to achieve success and stardom can be attributed as the reason why he has had such a large fan base in his native Bengal and surrounding regions. The other thing that people do know vaguely but not properly is that Mithun has been trained properly in martial arts under expert guidance.
After quitting the Naxalite cause he entered the film world with the movie Mrigaya that was directed by Mrinal Sen in 1976. With his first movie he won the most important award that is conferred to films by the Indian government, he won the National Award for Best Actor for this film. But it did not put him into the big league of film stars, this because in India when compared to international film industries you need have big hits to get the kind of recognition where as there it is the performance that matters. Mithun then appeared in a few movies like ‘Do Anjaane’ in 1976 and ‘Phool Khile Hain Glushan Glushan’ in 1977, in both these movies he appeared in a supporting cast and as the film didn’t do well at the box office he too couldn’t get mileage from their release.
But with success of a low budget film titled ‘Surakshaa’ that was released in 1979 and directed by Ravikant Nagaich he started a phase in which he gain tremendous success and his status as a leading actor of Bollywood was established. With movies like ‘Hum Paanch’ that was release in 1980 and ‘Wardaat’ which is a sequel to ‘Surakshaa’ released in 1981 he become more famous and started to grow as an actor too. 1982 he starred in the smash hit movie ‘Disco Dancer’. This movie has the stamp of Mithun Chakraborty written all over it. Till date the movie – Disco Dancer is synonymous with Mithun Chakraborty. Film like ‘Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki’ that was released in 1984 & ‘Dance Dance’ released in 1987 enhanced his reputation as being the king of the dance floor.
Mithun has acted in over 400 hundred film so talking about the various movies he has starred in would be an exhaustive list that would not end. Some of his best movies were during the period of 1980’s and early 1990’s. Later on he even shed his dancing image and donned the colors of an action hero and there too he met great success. In the 80’s some of his most memorable film worth a mention are ‘Swrag Se Sunder’ in 1986, ‘Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye’ in 1983, ‘Pyaar Jhukta Nahi’ in 1985 and ‘Pyar Ka Mandir’ in 1988 all of these remain among his best commercial successes to date. The took a break from acting in the later half 90’s he took a break from acting while in the mid 90’s he acted more often in low budget B-grade movies because as of then he had a high fan following amongst the rural people of India. He has recently a few years ago made a comeback to acting in Bollywood movies and he recently starred in the super hit movie ‘Guru’ that was directed by Mani Ratnam and also starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.
