Bollywood Actor Nana Patekar

Nana Patekar’s real name is Vishwanath Patekar. He was born on January 1st 1951 in Murud-Janjira in the Indian state of Maharashtra. His father’s name was Bankar Patekar who was a painter by profession and his mother’s name was Sangana Patekar. Nana completed his education from the famous college of Sir J. J. institute of Applied Arts, Mumbai. From college time itself he had a keen interest in inter college dramatics.
So it was but natural for him to make a career out of acting. From the outset itself Nana wanted to do different roles and by that he meant ‘different roles’, not the typecast roles that we have become so accustomed to seeing our Bollywood actors perform in every other movie of their’s. He wanted to do meaningful roles, roles that either have a message or those that he himself has never had the chance to perform eariler in his career. This is something that even modern day actors never dare to attempt, because the fear of failure is a risk for them. They feel safe to do the simpler roles that are more widely accepted by the auidences.
Nana Patekar began his Bollywood journey with the movie Gaman in 1978. Though the movie did not do well at all but he somehow still wanted to become an actor of repute. His next release came an astonishing eight years after his first release, astonishing because Bollywood actors have a habit of acting in 3-4 projects every year and then having 3-4 releases every year. So for an actor to not have a release in eight years would mean that he has no existance at all. But director N. Chandra cast him in his 1986 film – Ankush. This film did wonderfully well and suddenly Nana was in business and on the road to stardom. This movie started a successful journey for Nana Patekar that has continued ever since.
Nana Patekar has been involved in some really nice movies, these movies have touched the audiences in one or the other way in such a manner that he will be remembered for these roles for a long time to come. What is also note worthy of his acting that his dialogue delivery and sense of timing is so good that instantly after a sad scene in the next frame he could make you laugh so much that you would be holding your stomach tight. Parinda, a film directed by India’s answer to Steven Spielberg, Vidhu Vinod Chopra depicted him as a villain running an underworld nexus involved in money laundering, kidnapping and such activities. He played the role to perfection along with Jackie Shroff and the movie was a country wide success. The role fetched him the National Award and also the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also played major role in the 1996 hit movie Khamoshi The Musician directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and co-starring with Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala At times during his career, it was noted that he was an epitome of the "angry young man" role and that he was well suited for such roles and would carry it on as a forerunner of Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty.
The other film worth mentioning is ‘Krantiveer’ made by Mehul Kumar. This movie was one of his best, it had the typical fast dialogue delivery by Nana and he said it all with such authority that those who saw the movie at the cinema halls stood up and whistled every time he said something in applause. Paresh Rawal also did a great job as a supporting actor in this movie. So metamorphic was this movie that all the people from the Bollywood fraternity, all the critics, the press, the audiences took note of his acting. His acting was vindicated when he was honored with the National Award, the Star Screen Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for this very movie.
In 2007, his movie – Welcome hit the multiplexes and it was a major hit, both in India and internationally. Other actors in the movie are Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, Anil Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat and Feroz Khan. Another of his movie in 2007 was 'Yatra' co-starring with evergreen actress Rekha. We are sure that in the coming years his acting power will bring him and Bollywood fraternity more success. He is truly different in the real sense and his fan base is no less than that of the other major Bollywood actors.
