Naseeruddin Shah was born on July 20th, 1950. From very early in his studying days Naseeruddin Shah had an inclination towards acting and theater. Naseeruddin completed his early education from St Joseph’s College in Nainital. Thereafter in 1973 he completed his graduation in Bachelor of Arts course from the Aligrah Muslim University, National School of Drama and the very same year in persuasion of enhancing his acting skills he took admission at the Film and Television Institute of India.

Naseeruddin Shah is one of India’s most versatile actors. During the length of his career he has done very role that is there to be done, he has played a villain, a comedian, a hero, and has starred in Hollywood movies as well. He started his Bollywood journey in not so typical Bollywood style. In the early part of his career he appeared in many parallel cinema movies which in those days were quite prevalent. He made his debut in Shyam Benegal’s 1975 movie titled Nishant. His tasted more success in the coming few years. In 1979 his movie Sparsh was released. For his simply outstanding portrayal of a blind man in the movie he was awarded India’s National Film Award for Best Actor. For the next two years he would again win the best actor’s award this time from Filmfare for his roles in the movie Aakrosh and Chakra. Getting three consecutive best actor awards established him as one of Bollywood’s and also India’s top actors.

Naseeruddin Shah, along with some of the other fresh acting talents like Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and Om Puri worked in many movies together as there was a wave of new directors who couldn’t afford casting the superstar of Bollywood in their movies and these young actors wanted a platform to showcase their acting skills. With movies like Bhumika in 1977, Bhavni Bhavai released in 1980, then Ardh Satya in 1982 and Mirch Masala released in 1986 all these then young acting talents were able to display that they were a part of new Indian cinema that was different and did not fear taking up social issues in their movies. Naseeruddin Shah’s acting of comedy genre in the 1982 hit Jane Bhi Do Yaaro is an excellent example of his acting skills. So simple looking was his acting in the movie that you would be mistaken to think that it’s just a routine role but the way he does it only he can do it.

He then gradually started appearing in more mainstream Bollywood movies. His first notable mainstream movie is Hum Paanch. In 1983 he starred in the Shekhar Kapoor directed movie ‘Masoom’. It till date remains one the best films that tackle the issue of a man having a child from an extra marital affair. His performance is widely accepted as one of his best and he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the third time in four years. In 1986 he played along side Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar, actress Nutan, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. in the movie Karma. The movie was one of the biggest hit of that year and so Naseeruddin Shah’s career was now very well established and his versatility as an actor proved beyond doubt. In 1988 he played the role of Inspector Ghote in the English language movie ‘The Perfect Murder’ made by Merchant-Ivory. In 1988 he acted in the movie 'Hero Hiralal' directed by Ketan Mehta. It is a movie about an auto rickshaw driver(Naseeruddin Shah) who falls in love with a film actress. Amitabh Bachchan also gave a special appearance in this movie.

All through his career he has appeared in many successful movies and at a stage later on his career he became very selective of projects he would do. He also had the chance to play the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the movie ‘Gandhi’ made by Richard Attenborough that as later famously bagged by Ben Kingsley much to the disappointment of Naseeruddin Shah. He was however able to complete his dream of portraying Mahatma Gandhi in Kamal Hassan’s Hey Ram, the movie focused on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi from an angle and view of the killer. Naseeruddin Shah also has starred in a major Hollywood production along side the legendary Sean Connery in the film – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
