Bollywood film director Nikhil Advani

Nikhil Advani

Nikhil Advani is an Indian director working in the Bollywood industry. He was born in Mumbai, Maharahstra, India on 28 April, 1971. He worked under Dharma Productions which was the production house of the late Yash Johar, father of Karan Johar. He was assistant to Karan Johar and was assistant director. He assisted him in his two directorial projects, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. The film was the biggest hit of 2003 and firmly established him as a director. He then went on to direct his own movies.

Old habits never goes off in case of Salman Khan, who certainly knows how to get what he wants. The war between Salman and John has now been taken up a notch by Salman as he threatened Nikhil Advani to cut short John Abraham’s role in the forthcoming movie ‘Salaam-e-Ishq’ else he would quit the movie. When Salman signed this multi-starrer movie he was expected to have the maximum screen time however; on seeing the chemistry between John Abraham and Vidya Balan Nikhil decided to increase the time this new movie duo gets to spend onscreen. Nikhil is in fix as Salman has been the main driver for financiers to back him and if he walks out of the project the movie is likely to get shelved.

What made Nikhil decide on an animation film? Was he trying to be one up on his erstwhile producer friend Karan, who's also producing an animation film? Advani said: 'No such thing. It's just a funny coincidence that whatever Karan does, I end up doing the same. It was Ayesha's father's idea to do the animation film. I was neck-deep into pre-production for my big film 'From Chandni Chowk To China'. This was the last distraction I needed. But now that I've done it, I must say I had a ball.'

Action-comedy is Akshay Kumar's forte and Nikhil Advani's 'Chandni Chowk To China' seems to be just what the box office doctors ordered. Talking about his casting choice, Motwane says, “I met John (Abraham) on the sets of Deepa Mehta’s Water, where I worked as a choreographer, and narrated the story to him. He liked it and agreed to do the film. After that, Vidya (Balan) too agreed."I was looking for a producer when a common friend suggested I meet Nikhil (Advani), who had started a production company. My friend put in a word for me and after Nikhil heard the story, he agreed to produce it.”

In an interview on a question “Why did you decide to turn independent producer?”. He say’s “It has been a dream. It is the ultimate goal of any creative person or director that at the end of the day, he must have complete control over whatever he is doing. Even while I worked as an assistant director with Karan Johar or Aditya Chopra or Sudhir Mishra, I have always been involved in the production. When you or your director wants a certain quality, you need to be able to take decisions. Whether it is location, hiring a car, casting an actor, you need to take financial decisions also, so that the creative things a director wants are achieved. I used to assist Karan Johar and at the same time I used to be in sync with Yash Johar. I have always been obsessed with production. In fact, if I wasn't doing this [his new film] right now, I would be executive producer for Karan Johar's film.”

He says about Dharma Production “They are fantastic producers. They gave me complete freedom to do whatever I wanted. I got an opportunity. Since this opportunity presented itself, I took it. I have always been crazy about film production. Why not take it? Maybe this option will never come again. What if the second film is not as big as the first?”

After 'Chandni Chowk To China', its 'Chand Bhai' for director Nikhil Advani. The film is about a boy on the streets who wants to be a gangster. Nikhil Advani now wants to make an animation film, "Ab Dilli Door Nahin", about five animals from the jungle seeking an audience with politicians in Delhi. Just one hitch - the title belongs to R.K. Films. In 1957, the illustrious Raj Kapoor produced an experimental film called "Ab Dilli Door Nahin" about a young boy from a far off village travelling to Delhi to meet then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The film bombed. But Nikhil feels it's the correct title for his film. After making romantic movies “Kal Ho Naa Ho” and “Salaam-e-Ishq”(starring Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chalwa, Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takia, John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Govinda, Shannon Esra, Sohail Khan and Isha Koppikar in lead roles.), Nikhil Advani is now set to prove his versatility with Rohan Sippy’s international project “Made in China”, an action movie.“I don’t want to be identified by any one style or genre. After doing an action film like ‘Made In China’ I could possibly do a horror film,” Advani told to IANS.
