Om Puri is the legendary Indian film of great repute. Om Puri was born on October 18, 1950 in a small Haryana town of Ambala that is located in the Northern part of India. He graduated from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India and in addition he has also studied at the National School of Drama and passed out in the year 1973, it was in his batch where he had another great Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah for company.

Om Puri along with Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi starred in a lot of parallel movies together during the start of their careers and most of these movies were well appreciated and in more ways that one proved to be the stepping for each other their successful Bollywood and international careers. Film like ‘Bhavani Bhavai’ released in 1980, ‘Sadgati’ in 1981, ‘Ardh Satya’ released in 1982 and ‘Mirch Masala’ released in 1986, all these movies have had these 4 actors act together.

As the 80's set in, Om Puri was being regarded as an actor par excellence, to none and better than the best, his acting abilities just didn't have that song and romance kind of thing. What he was able to achieve then was beyond the imagination of most other Indian actors. After the play a vital role in 'Sadgati' a film by Mr. Satyajit Ray that was released in 1981 in India, he also had be fortune of acting he some other really progressive Indian film of that time directed by the likes of Mani Kaul, Ketan Mehta & Shyam Benegal. Since these movie were widely screen on the international scene and they being good movies, Om Puri started to create a niche for himself. This brought fame and recognition from international audiences and directors.

It is truly is class as an actor that landed him roles in some major international projects. He played an important role in the internationally acclaimed movie 'Gandhi', 'The Jewel in the Crown' & 'City of Joy' that was released in 1992. It is not just the case of Indian and sub continental critics that are amazed by his versatility; the whole world has witnessed & marveled at the depth and tenacity with which plays a character.

This great actor has starred in over a hundred and forty international and Indian and Bollywood genre movies. Though it could be tough to rate his best ever performance by as he has set high standards in all his movies, but many critics have been able to conclude that of his till date performances his best international achievement are when he has played the character of a Pakistani patriarchs. In the movie 'My Son the Fanatic' released in 1997, he acts in the role of Parvez, a open-minded Pakistani taxi person residing in Northern part of England, who is suddenly faced with his son's brand new loyalty to fundamental Muslim teachings. In 2005 he played the role of a doctor in the movie "Kyon Ki" co-starring with Salman Khan, Rimi Sen, Kareena Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Asrani, Sunil Shetty and more. The movie was directed by Priyadarshan.

This performance made even the hardest of non-purist suit up and take notice and was voted as one of the highly enduring acting performance of that year. In the movie 'East is East' that is directed by Damien O'Donnell and released in 1999, saw him open a new chapter in his acting, he combined brilliantly his comic sense with a frightening display of a complex, conservative husband, father and chip & fish store proprietor. Again his mind-blowing performance got him a nomination at BAFTA Awards of 2000 for Best Actor. He has acted besides some of Hollywood’s biggest names like Val Kilmer, Jack Nicholson, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks too. Now why do we have this huge roar when some leading Bollywood stars are being offer some in consequential roles in Hollywood movies? Om Puri has proved that Indian actors can act as good as anyone else.
