Bollywood Actor Prem Chopra

Prem Chopra

This great actor of Bollywood is famous as a villain role in Bollywood. Having touched the heart and souls of millions of fans he has proved himself to them like a good Bollywood actor .

Early Life: One of the icons of the Hindi Cinema world, Prem was the third of six children born to Ranbirlal and Rooprani Chopra in Lahore .The actor was born on 1st of January with star sign Virgo. After the partition the family moved to Shimla where he along with his four brothers and one sister did their education. He graduated from the Punjab University however the actor in him had already begun to surface . He had been participating on stage since his college days.

In 1950 Prem Chopra came down from Simla to try his luck in films and like most hopefuls wanted to become a hero. He joined the newspaper The Times of India in Bombay. He kept trying to get a break in films. He started out as a leading man in a Punjabi film Choudhary Karnail Singh. Around that time he met Mr. Tolaram Jalaram of Filmistan studios and a writer Mr. Bakshi. Bakshi had one look at him and said that if he could somehow give up dreams of becoming a hero and become a villain, he would sweep the market because he was good-looking. He decided to take a chance and gave the slot of 'villain' a shot. A shot which worked and how ?

Among his early films he played Sukhdev in Shaheed, one of his rare positive leading roles. In Shaheed he played a role of freedom fighter who sacrifices his life for country. This film on patriotism was made with great economic difiiculties, but it came across as one of the most honest and pure films. People who see this film even now, cry unfailingly. such is the impact of this film. After Teesari Manjeel and Upkaar he was flooded with films as a villain. After Upkaar in 1967 he left The Times of India.

Then arrived the golden era of seventies. With commendable performances in Kati Patang (1970), Himmat (1970), Gora Aur Kaala (1972), and Bobby (1973) -- Prem was shining like a star, albeit in a different realm. He received many awards for his role in Kati Patang and even he was nominated for film fare award. This catapulted the actor to the prime of his career in Bollywood. In the realm of evildom, where crime is a profession and the will of 'Satan' reigns supreme. Prem Chopra justified each and every aspect of the role of a villain. From wearing his white 'head to toe' dress to kill and murmuring threats in his low bass and nasal 'signature voice', Prem Chopra became a quintessential brand of vice. Not to forget the imitable tinge of humour, he would add to his blood curdling mannerisms. 'Master of innovation', Chopra would add a new element to each role and never really allowed himself to go out of vogue. Be it in brief appearances such as in Bobby, or extensive ones as in Daag, Prem Nagar and Mehbooba, Prem Chopra never failed to make his mark. In the mean while he got married with Uma and proved himself as a good husband totally opposite to the roles played by him in bollywood.

Later on he was blessed with three darling daughter’s Rakita, Punita and Prerana. The 70's was the transitionary period where in Amitabh Bachchan replaced Rajesh Khanna as the Cinematic King. But Prem Chopra remained just there, sharing the limelight with Amitabh Bachhan in Kala Pathar, Do Anjaane, The Great Gambler and Trishul amongst other films Seventies and eighties were his heydays and a period of prolific filmmaking.

In 80's he ralded a time a new generation of actors were creating waves. Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol to name a few. Prem Chopra successfully matched this new lot. While he worked with Dharmendra in numerous films, he now also lent able support to son Sunny Deol in Betaab, Arjun, Manzil Manzil amongst other films. Both father Manoj Kumar (Kranti) and son Kunal (Ricky) had to contend with the same baddie Prem Chopra.

He received Best Supporting actor Filmfare award for his role in Do Anjaane. Amongst other awards won the Giants honoured him with the "Lifetime Achievement Award". His talent also meritted him the "Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award" in 1998, the "Lions Club Award", "Ashoka Award", "Ashirwad Award" and the "Punjabi Kala Sangam Award". The dialogue “My name is Prem , Prem Chopra” from the film Bobby has been very famous. In one of his interviews he say’s “I have helped in making the good triumph over evil which is always the need of the life. I have done it at great risk, sometimes even putting my reputation at stake. I think that is quit a contribution to life, don't you think so?”.
