Rajnikanth’s full name is Shivji Rao Gaekwad Devarasi Makan, which is certainly a long name. He was born on December 12th 1949 in Karnataka, India. Rajnikanth is the fourth of the siblings in his family. His father’s name is Ramojirao Gaekwad while his mother’s name is Jijabai Gaekwad. Rajnikanth attended the Acharya Patashala during his schooling days. His mother left for heavenly abode when he was merely 5 years old. Thereafter he studied at the Vivekananda Balaka Sangha which is a part of the Ramakrishna Mission. Due to poverty Rajnikanth has to struggle a lot in the early part of his life.

He started his career by doing different jobs and had to change his jobs frequently to make most the opportunities that came his way. He also worked as the bus conductor for the Bangalore Transport Service in Bangalore. It during this time that he horned his acting skills meeting various people from all walks of life. In 1973 with the advice of his friend the join the Madras Film Institute and completed a basic course in acting. While learning acting he started taking part in various stage plays and then would rehearse on reaching home.

Rajnikanth has mainly acted in south Indian film with few and far between appearances in Bollywood movies. He got his first break in the Tamil film ‘Apoorva Raagangal’ where he was cast in a supporting role play the person suffering from cancer, the film was released in 1975. This movie was directed by K. Balachander. In 1976 he appeared in his first Kannada movie titled ‘Katha Sangama’ directed by Puttanna Kanagal. Rajnikanth has most often termed K. Balachander to be his ‘guru’, the man who directed him in his first Tamil movie. But it is S.P. Muthuraman who should be given the credit for transforming him into a leading actor by casting him in different roles in a succession of movies. S.P. Muthuraman first cast Rajnikanth in a positive role with the movie – Bhuvana Oru Kelvikuri in 1977.

In the first part of the movie Rajnikanth plays a villainous role and in the second part he turns into a good human being. And the movie turned out to have successful time at the box office. Then S.P. Muthuraman again cast him in a movie Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai that was released in 1979, wherein Rajnikanth plays the role of a father who gives up everything for the love of his kids. This role was much apperciated by the female auidence and it proved to be anther successful movie for Rajnikanth. In 1977 he appeared in many films playing the villains role opposite actor Kamal Hassan with film like Moondru Mudichu, Avargal & Pathinaaru Vayadhinilae. With a string of successes to his name his career touched sky high. He also acted in many hindi movies along with actress Sridevi

Then when he was at the pinnacle of success he for unknown reasons announced his decision to quit acting. But goodness gracious he didn’t stay away too long and returned to touch even greater heights. Returning after a brief absence he starred in the movie ‘Billa’ that was a remake of the 1978 Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan super hit – Don. Billa too was a smash hit and its success established Rajnikanth as one of the leading actor of south Indian films. His movies when ever release proved to be hits, he was dishing out hits as if it was a dish cleaner throwing plates out of the kitchen sink. Pokkiri Raja, Murattukaalai, Thanikattu Raja, Moondru Mugam & Naan Mahaan Alla are all successes to his credit in the mid 1980’s and Thee, Padikkathavan, Velaikkaran, Mr. Bharath, Dharmathin Thalaivan & Maaveeran are all names of his hit movies in the later part of the 1980’s.

During his entire career he has delivered so many his that his fans have made him a demi god of sort in the south. There are numerous Rajnikanth fan clubs each posing to be the most loyal. There are posters and photos of his that are worshiped every day and the places where has acted have in some instances become shrines for his fans to visit and worship. So large is his fan following that it could easily out shame in of his most iillustrious Bollywood counter part. In 2002 he acted in a Tamil Film Baba co-starring with Indian bollywood Actor Shatrughan Sinha and directed by Suresh Krishna.

Rajnikanth has acted in as many as a hundred and seventy-three Indian films ranging from Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and Telugu. For his recent blockbuster movie titled ‘Shivaji: The Boss’ he was reportedly paid a handsome amount of sixteen crore rupees to act in the movie. It proved to be a super success and it became the 1st Tamil movie to be list in the top 10 movie charts of South Africa and the UK.
