Bollywood film director Ram Gopal Verma

Ram Gopal Verma

Ram Gopal Verma was born on 7th April 1962. His father’s name is Krishnam Raju while his mother’s name is Suryamma. When studying at the V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College in Vijaywada in the civil engineering branch he dumped his studies to start a video parlor shop in Hyberabad. But his ultimate aim was to get into films. He never attended his lectures properly and at every given opportunity he would be found watching Indian as well as English movies. His partner in crime would be his uncle and the two of them would always run away to cinema halls to catch a glimpse of the latest flicks. No surprise that his parents were unpleased with his actions and when he decided to join the filmmaking world they were unsupportive of his decision.

He entered the film industry by his own choice and not by circumstance. Ram Gopal Verma is fondly referred to as Ramu in the Film Industry. Ramu first started his career as a production assistant for Raogarillu and Collectorgari Abbai films that were produced by S.S. Creations. Right from the start of his career Ramu has never been overburdened by the thought of delivering the results at the box office. Neither did he feel compelled to follow successful box office formulas to find success for his own movies. Rather it is of utmost importance to him that he makes movies about realist things, things that convey a message in an entertaining way.

His first directorial venture was the movie ‘Shiva’ starring Nagarjuna. Ram Gopal Verma directed the movie, he wrote the script and the screenplay of this movie too. The movie is a gritty portrayal of politics in collage, since Ramu too attended college though not on many occasions he had a good idea of what college politics is all about. The movie turned our to be a smash hit and the journey of India’s most erratic and enigmatic director of the modern times started with a bang.

Thereafter the success story of Ram Gopal Verma continued to hit movie screens and the audience like him more after every release. Some of his notable earlier movies are ‘Kshana Kshanam’, starring Venkatesh and Sridevi, then Antham, Raatri & also Govinda Govinda. With so many success to him name it was a natural move for Ram Gopal Verma to start his own production company. He kept the name of his production company as – Verma Corporation Limited. He produced many Telugu movies from the company. Film like Gulabi, Wife of Mr. Vara Prasad & Money, Money, Money are all from the Verma stable.

Verma’s first Bollywood success was the film Rangeela. Rangeela starred Aamir Khan and then struggling actress Urmila Mandondkar. The story of the movie has Urmila as a group dancer who dreams of making it big in Bollywood while Aamir is a pocket thief and a tapori chap who has been playing with Urmila since childhood. Aamir likes Urmila but never confesses to her. The dance, the music and Urmila’s sensuous body in the movie makes her a superstar in real life too and the movie’s success made all of Bollywood dance to Ramu’s tunes.

Later on during the course of his career Ramu has indeed made some great cinema as well as some average cinema. He has made movies like Satya, Company, Jungle, Bhoot, Sarkar and Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag. Even today it doesn’t bother to him what the press and the film journalist write about him, his relationship with various female actresses and his movies. He makes his movies the way he thinks he would like to present a subject to his audiences and if someone doesn’t like it he has no objection to that either.
