She is the queen of the queens and has dominated the Bollywood for almost a decade. Rani Mukerji has proved beyond doubt that she is the Numero Uno amongst the Bollywood actresses. This Bengali Beauty has become a yardstick for success at the box office.
Rani Mukerji’s father is a Bengali Movie Director. The actress was born on 21 March 1978. She did her schooling and college in Mumbai. Her intentions of making a career in Bollywood were evident right from the beginning when she did a cameo in her father's Bengali film in 1992. She made her debut in Bollywood in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. She performed the role of a rape victim. The movie did not succeed at the box office.
Rani Mukerji returned to Bollywood with Ghulam. She acted opposite Aamir Khan and was taken notice of right away. Her song with Aamir Khan “ Ati Kya Khandala” was a super hit. She became famous in Bollywood as the Khandala girl. The movie was successful at the box office. The next major hit was Karan Johar's, Kuch
Kuch Hota Hai. This was a very big movie and Karan Johar was expected to do a fine job. With superstars Shahrukh Khan and Kajol this movie gave the right platform to Rani Mukerji. The movie was a super hit and Rani Mukerji earned her first Filmfare Award. She was adjudged the Best Supporting Actress. The ball had been set rolling.
Rani Mukerji did a number of movies after the success of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Notable amongst them were Hey Ram, Hadh Kar Di Aapne and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. Hey Ram was India’s official entry to Oscars. Hadh Kar Di Aapne was a lovely comedy with Govinda. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke had an unusual theme of a surrogate mother. 'Mujhse Dosti Karoge' (directed by Kunal Kohli) was the next big movie for Rani Mukerji in 2002. This movie was with Hrithik Roshan, Uday Chopra and Kareena Kapoor and did big business abroad. However the biggest success in the year was Saathiya with Vivek Oberoi. This movie although not glamorous, attracted the audiences. It gave Rani Mukerji her first Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. The songs of the movie were hit and made Rani Mukerji a household name. By now Rani Mukerji was fully established as a super star. Chalte Chalte with Shahrukh Khan was also loved by the audiences. This was followed by a comedy, Chori Chori, in which she was in a comic role.
A string of hits was to follow. Rani Mukerji again won critical acclaim for Yuva. The next major hit was Hum Tum. This movie with Saif Ali Khan was a lovely comedy based on an English movie and a super hit. There was no stopping back. The actress delivered Veer Zara with Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta. In this movie she plays the role of a Pakistani Lawyer committed to the cause of a woman. This movie was one of the biggest grossers of the year. All Directors seemed to have taken fancy for the actress. Sanjay Leela Bhansali made Black in which Rani Mukerji played the role of a deaf and blind girl. This was indeed one of the best performances ever seen in Bollywood. Rani Mukerji had to act only through expressions since she was playing the role of a dumb deaf and blind girl. With Amitabh Bachchan this movie was on of the finest movies ever produced in Bollywood. Rani Mukerji won both the Filmfare Best Actress and the Critics Award for this movie. This movie can certainly be called the defining moments of her career.
Thereafter almost every movie of hers was a superhit. Bunty Aur Babli with Abhishek Bachchan was again a super hit. Her role of a small time thief was loved by Bollywood fans. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna by Karan Johar was the next big movie. Although the movie was not a super hit in India it did very good business abroad. This was followed by Ta Ra Rum Pum which was also a super hit. The Rani Mukerji mania slightly tapered off in 2007. Her Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Saawariya in second half of the year failed at the box office.
Rani Mukerji has had a fair share of controversy. The latest rumours have suggested that she is going to marry Aditya Chopra, son of Yash Chopra, after his divorce is complete. She was criticized when in an interview she reportedly stated that Adolph Hitler was her idol. She also came under cloud for acquiring land at Shirdi in Maharashtra and when police manhandled her fans in Varanasi. However she has always managed to come clean.
