Bollywood Actress Raveena Tandon

Raveena Tandon was born on 26th October 1974 in Mumbai, India. She was born to Bollywood producer & director of 70’s & 80’s Ravi Tandon and her mother’s was Veena Tadon. Raveena derived her name from a mixture of both her dad and mom’s name. The first two letters of her dad’s name (Ra) and her mom’s entire name (veena) gave Raveena her name. That’s how Raveena got her name.

Raveena, at first for primary education attended the famous Jamnabai Narsee School located in Juhu area of Mumbai and then later on she studied at Mithibai College. She entered college and complete the first & second, during her third year of college she had in her class current Bollywood actor Fardeen Khan. During the progression of the third year of college she however dropped out as she wanted to start her career in modeling for which she received various offers and she succumbed to the glitz and glamour of the modeling world.

Though she had a fairly successful modeling career but still she didn’t achieve what can be termed as hugely successful or like she wasn’t amongst the most successful models. But she had a height of 5 feet 5.5 inches, which for an Indian girl was good and rather acceptable in Indian modeling and acting. She started to receive offers to star in Bollywood movies. She made her Bollywood debut in the movie Patthar Ke Phool in 1991, the movie got noticed and so did she. She won the Filmfare Award for Best New Face. A new star was born and she thereafter was a very popular actress, especially among men but somehow her acting skills were never of the caliber that one could go and watch her movies and come out raving about her acting abilities.

During the entire span of her career her movies were many but only a few tasted successes while the others stooped in failure. After her debut movie ‘Patthar Ke Phool’ her next movie ‘Parampara’ released in 1992 should have been a box office success, it had a multiple star cast of Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan but unfortunately the film didn’t do well and she couldn’t taste success. In 1993 she had few releases like Ek Hi Raasta, Divya Shakti, Pehla Nasha, Dilwale and Laadla. Out these releases the first three were all flops and disappointments for her but Dilwale starring Ajay Devgan was a big hit, thereafter Laadla starring Sridevi & Anil Kapoor was a hit. The success of the movie and her role of a decent girl working in a factory won her the nomination for Filmfare Award as Best Supporting Actress.

In 1994 there were quite a few releases again like Aatish, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Andaz Apna Apna and Mohra. The first two movies again bombed at the box office but the next two went on to establish her career in Bollywood. Andaz Apna Apna was a moderate success and it was highly appreciated by film buffs around the country for its really good comedy and all the character including the villain were shown doing comedy. Even today this movie can be watched over and over again. Then came Mohra, this movie was her career’s best performance in terms of movie success at box office, it made her popularity grow by leaps and bounds.

1995 was a forgetful year for Raveena in Bollywood, her first release with Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan in ‘Zamana Deewana’ failed to fire at the box office. In 1996 she had only a single hit to her credit – Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and in the entire year of 1997 only Ziddi was a success that she managed, though the movie was the year’s biggest grosser. She had some misses too that she might regret today, she was offered the super hit movie ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ later portrayed by Rani Mukerji and also that of Karisma Kapoor’s in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. She played opposite to Amitabh bachchan in hit movie Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

But she gave her career new direction when she started doing more meaningful roles, Shool released in 1999, Bulandi in 2000 and the critically acclaimed Aks in 2001. Aks won her the Filmfare Special Performance Award. Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence won her the country’s most prestigious award – National Film Award for Best Actress. She has since then ventured in film producing too.
