Sanjay Leela Bhansali is today one of Bollywood’s well known film directors. Sanjay has completed his course in filmmaking from the famous Film and Television Institute of India located in Pune. His real name is Sanjay Bhansali and he has adopted his mother, Leela Bhansali’s middle name and incorporated it into his own name as homage to his mother and is therefore is referred to as Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His mother once told him that ‘the dreams are yours’ & the nightmares are mine’.

His debut Bollywood directorial venture Khamoshi: The Musical was released in 1996 starring Salman Khan and Nana Patekar. Before that his first brush with Bollywood was in 1989 when as an associate director he worked on the sets of the hit movie ‘Parinda’. Sanjay was also the associate director & writer of the movie 1942: A Love Story, both these movies ‘Parinda’ & ‘1942: A Love Story’ were directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Khamoshi is the story of a young girl whose parents are both deaf and couldn’t talk as well. In his first movie itself Sanjay had the guts to make a movie with a difference. He received many awards for this film. His next movie proved that he was no one flick wonder and his capabilities were far beyond his experience as a director. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was his next venture. In it, he wrote the screenplay, he wrote the story and he directed the movie too. This movie made people sit and notice of the grandeur, the visualization of scenes, the rich color of the costumes of the actors and actresses and the songs, everything was done in manner that was larger than life. The movie was loved by everyone and with that came recognition from all corners.

With his next movie he grabbed even more success and more accolades. ‘Devdas’ was one more movie from Sanjay that had everything in it, a good story well narrated, good costumes, lovely dance sequences and great acting from Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwariya Rai. The movie is the adaptation of the 1917 classic written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhye.

And then came the movie that can be called the pinnacle of his career till date. ‘Black’ is the most well made and narrated movies of its time. The movie ‘Black’ starred Bollywood icon and superstar Amitabh Bachchan and leading actress Rani Mukerji. The move’s storyline has a girl who deaf and cannot speak either and her mother wants her to be educated while her father has his reservations as he felt it would be impossible for his daughter to get educated. Herein enters Amitabh Bachchan to take up the challenge of teaching a blind girl. And be finds success, later he loses his memory. It made people cry and cry after watching movie as they were all filled with emotions. The movie was selected and rated amongst the ten Best Movies of 2005 by Time Magazine (Europe). Of those ten movies ‘Black’ took the number five position.

Thereafter he planned to make a movie starring Kareena Kapoor and Salman Khan in the lead roles, the idea was to bring both these Bollywood actors together on screen for the first time. But this happened in the film Kyonki. He titled the movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and has now according to reports signed Shivani Kapoor to play the role of Kareena Kapoor. As of now the movie has been put on hold as Sanjay was till recently busy shooting for Saawariya and once he returns from a much deserved break this movie will be completed.

Sanjay’s last release was Saawariya, the lead actors for this movie were two debutants in the form of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor both kids of Bollywood stars and along with the debutants were Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji. Sanjay released the movie in cinemas near the Diwali weekend, the exact date being November 9th, 2007. Due to promotions of the movie being highly aggressive the film got a bumper opening at the collection counters but did not live up to expectations and the returns gradually diminished.
