He is a director, an actor of high talent, and a dialogue writer, a successful TV anchor and has also been an assistant director to none other than Hollywood’s Indian director Shekhar Kapoor. Yes assistant director, that’s how Satish started his career in Bollywood. Satish was the assistant director to Shekhar Kapur in the Bollywood film ‘Masoom’ and it was also his first movie as an actor. This critically acclaimed film also starred Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Supriya Pathak and Saeed Jaffrey, as well as child actors Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar . His most notable acting performance was in another film directed by Shekhar Kapur titled ‘Mr. India’ co-starring with Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri.

The played the role of ‘calendar’. Throughout the movie he is so affable taking care of the homeless kids that kids would want to bring him home once the movie is over. The movie was probably India’s first attempt at making a techno sci-fi movie where in the lead actor played by Anil Kapoor who chances upon a watch that makes him invisible. For his comic acting abilities that were on full display in the Subhash Ghai directed movie ‘Ram Lakhan’(co-starring with Anil kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Gulshan Grover, Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit) released in 1990 and in ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’ released in 1997 he was award the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian on both occasions. Saajan Chale Sasural was directed by David Dhawan and Satish Kaushik co-starred with many famous indian actors and actresses like Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, actress Tabu, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor and Satish Shah.

Satish entered the direction part of film making with the movie ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor produced the movie and at that time it was considered to be one of the most expensive movies ever made in Bollywood. The sets, the songs, the music and all things were extravagant but the film bombed at the office box resulting in losses in tune of millions. However Satish had the confidence of trusting his own abilities in direction and he then directed another Bollywood film again for Boney Kapoor titled ‘Prem’.

This movie was supposed to be the launch movie for Boney Kapoor’s brother Sanjay Kapoor along with the debut of the actress Tabu. The movie took a long time in making with delays and further delays. Ultimately when it saw the day of light it met with the same fate as his previous movie. It was another failure for Satish Kaushik. But he continued to take strides in film direction and his perseverance finally paid off in 1999 when his film ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rahate Hain’.

But his biggest success as a director came in the form of the Bollywood hit ‘Tere Naam’ starring Bollywood actor Salman Khan along side Bhumika Chawla that was released in 2003. Salman plays the character of ‘Radhey Mohan’ and Bhumika’s name in the movie is ‘Nirjara’. Radhey is a fanatic and extremely rowdy but on meeting Nirjara he has a change of heart and begins to like her. Taking advantage of the new soft Radhey his old foes attack him and leave him with loss of memory. Due to some circumstances Nirjara commits suicide and when Radhey recovers from memory loss and reaches her home he is shocked to know that she is no more. He then returns to the ashram to look for peace. The story was a hit with the masses and his hairstyle in the movie became a craze. Satish then directed a few more Bollywood film but has yet to attain the same success of ‘Tere Naam’. But with his kind of versatility success should not elude him any longer.
