A famous Bollywood actor, director and producer Shammi Kapoor was born as Shamsher Raj Kapoor on October 21, 1931 in Mumbai, India. His height was 6 ft and he knew Hindi and English. He remained at the climax of his career in late 1950s and 1960s. His father, Prithviraj Kapoor was a theatre and film actor, Shammi was the second of three sons. Three brothers became successful and famous Bollywood stars like their father. Shammi has performed a variety of roles in his movies and he was known as Indian Elvis Presley. Famous Bollywood stars Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were his brothers and Urmila Sial his sister.

Career

Thokar is his Debut film in 1953 directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. In this movie Shammi Kapoor acted with Shyama, Ravindra Kapoor, Johnny Walker, Lalita Pawar and Paro. Shammi Kapoor started his career with serious roles but after performing in Tumsa Nahin Dekha in 1957 with Ameeta and Dil Deke Dekho in 1959 with Asha Parekh he got the image of Playboy. In 1961 he acted in Junglee and liked the famous singer and friend, Mohammaed Rafi. He chose his friend Mohammed Rafi for his playback singing. In hit movies many famous songs of Mohammed Raf were being picturized on him. In his early roles he acted with established heroines and praised by the audience. Producers love to pair him with new heroines; Asha Parekh, Saira Banu, and Sharmila Tagore who became successful Bollywood actress afterward. He enjoyed working with Sharmila Tagore, Rajshree, and Asha Parekh. He acted in many films with these heroines but in 1966 his film Teesri Manzil with Asha Parekh remained most successful. When he was busy in this movie his wife Geeta Bali, who was an actress died of small pox. He has two small children and his romance with Mumtaz failed who was also a Bollywood actress.

In 1969 he married Neela, her second wife and he gained too much weight due to which her career ended as romantic hero with Andaaz in 1971. It was one of his last hit films and then in 1970s he acted as a supporting actor. In supporting roles he played a variety of roles will hit Bollywood actors. He directed Manoranjan and Bandalbaaz in 1974 and 1976. He performed a supporting role in the first one but none of them was successful on box office. He continued to play supporting roles in 1980 and 1990 and performed in many movies. He won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Vidhaata(directed by Subhash Ghai co-starring with Sanjay Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Padmini Kolhapure, Amrish Puri, Madan Puri and Sarika) in 1982. His performance was highly praised due to which he received Filmfare award. Then he ended to appear in movies in late 1990 and 2000 but in 2006 he appeared in Sandwich. Shammi Kapoor also produced a Hindi movie “Bhola in Bollywood” in 2005.

Shammi Kapoor was an internet user and spends his time on internet. He laid the foundation of Internet Users Community of India and became its chairman. He goes to dialysis three times a week but he is satisfied with his life and grateful to his God for all he has.

Awards and Recognition

Shammi Kapoor played different roles and won praise for his performance. He performed very well in his movies so he was nominated in 1962 for Filmfare Best Actor Award. Then he received Best Actor Award in 1968, Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 1982, Filmfare Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1995 and Zee Cine Award Lifetime Achievement in 1999.

In late 1990s and 2000 he retired from acting but he received many awards for his contribution to Indian cinema. He won Star Screen Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2001, Invaluable Contribution to Indian Cinema in 2002, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and Lifetime Achievement Award at Pune International Film Festival in 2008. Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry awarded him with Living Legend Award for his efforts in Bollywood film industry.
