Bollywood Actor Shatrughan Sinha

Shatrughan Sinha

Shatrughan Sinha was born in Patna, Bihar on 9th December 1946. Shatrughan Sinha is and will always remain a self made man who touch the pinnacle of Bollywood success as an actor. Despite being from a backward state of Bihar he came and conquered Bollywood in ways that not many can claim to have.

All through the 1970’s and the 1980’s he gave numerous stellar performances that the challenges to his acting supremacy can be counted on the fingers itself. Like most other successful actors of his generation Shatrughan did have an easy passage to becoming a lead actor and hero, he first had to make his mark as a villain and when he did those roles with a stamp of authority was he given a chance to act as a hero.

First Bollywood movie happens to be ‘Sajan’ that was release in the year 1969 and he played a small character role of a ‘Havaldar’ that presumably went unnoticed. Thereafter started the phase wherein he was cast as a main villain and for years he played such kind of roles with a high degree of success. ‘Raampur Ka Lakshman’ happened to be one such movie wherein he was very well appreciated for his villainous acting. This movie was released in the year 1972. By the time this movie hit the cinema screens Shatrughan had become a major star as a villain and the same is evident from the fact that in 1972 alone he had starred in 12 different Bollywood movies and that shows how much as an actor he was in demand. Apart for appearing in the film ‘Raampur Ka Lakshman’(The movie stars Randhir Kapoor and Rekha, it had Shatrughan Sinha as the villain.) he also appeared in what is considered to be a very good movie of those days – ‘Bombay to Goa’(co-starring with Amitabh Bachchan, Mehmood and Aruna Irani). In the movie Shatrughan plays the role of a person who’s fiancée doesn’t like him and therefore she flees him and he is after her to get her approval for the marriage. In 1973 he starred in the hit movie ‘Black Mail’ which then established him as the leading villains of his time along with actors Pran and Ajit.

So successful was he becoming that audience would love the way he would deliver his dialogues. His husky voice and the temper that he would present on screen would have all applauding and whistling in appreciation. These reactions had all producers and directors of Bollywood sit up and wonder about the extent of popularity that Shatrughan is going to achieve and if they start casting him in lead roles would the experiment prove to be successful or not. But it is always a matter of who is going to take a risk for an unproven star and have lakhs of rupees riding on his back. Well there was one director who took the risk and it paid handsome dividends. Director Subhash Ghai was the first director to cast Shatrughan Sinha as a lead actor in his Bollywood movie ‘Kalicharan’(co-starring with Reena Roy, Ajit, Danny Denzongpa, Madan Puri and Premnath) that was released in the year 1976 and had Shatrughan play a double role in his very first movie as a hero. In 1995 he acted in film 'Taaqat' along with Dharmendra, Kader Khan And Kajol. In 2002 he acted in a Tamil Film Baba co-starring with South Indian Actor Rajinikanth and directed by Suresh Krishna.

At the time when he was at the peak of his career and running head to head with other leading actors of his time, something struck him that he has some responsibilities to his country and countrymen. Obviously coming from the backward state of Bihar he might have thought that it is the correct time to do something for the people of Bihar. But his efforts of raising funds were many a times dashed by local political parties fearing he might undermine their importance. It struck to him that in India to prove your power and to do something good you shall require the support a political party. For that purpose he decided to join active politics and he joined the Bharatiya Janta Party and has been the Member of Parliament on many occasion and held the Ministry position on two occasions. Indeed he is a self made man of great proportions.
