Bollywood film director Subhash Ghai

Subhash Ghai was on January 24th 1945 in the small town of Sangrur located in the Northern Indian state of Punjab. Subhash Ghai completed his graduation from Rohtak in Haryana and thereafter went straight to Pune to fulfill his dream of working in Bollywood. At Pune lay the Film and Television Institute of India. It is from here that many super star and actor have made there way into the Indian Film Industry, Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah are two that come to mind instantly.

Subhash Ghai is today and has been for many years called the showman of Bollywood. He started his Bollywood career in 1976 when he landed his first directorial venture Kalicharan for which he will always be grateful to actor Shatrughan Sinha for recommending his name and helping get the job. The movie was like destined for success. Mr. Sinha played a double role in the movie, one being a real cop who was killed and his duplicate being trained to takeover his job and catch the real culprits. The music of every Subhash Ghai movie has been the high point of his film making, all his movies have had tremendous music and lyrics in them and the overseas copy rights where all sold at premium rates.

His next movie Vishwanath though was a complete failure, but that did not deter him one bit. He understood that the Indian audience wants a different story every time. He struck back with a vengeance, Karz, his first movie under the banner of Mukta Arts starring Rishi Kapoor and Tina Minium. The movie was declared a hit. Vidhaata was a 1982 Bollywood film directed by Subhash Ghai starring Sanjay Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure, Amrish Puri, Madan Puri and Sarika. In 1983 he release his first blockbuster movie titled ‘Hero’. He introduced Jackie Shroff in this movie. Jackie lived in the suburbs of Bombay and had a notorious past but he life made a complete turn around after the movie’s success.

After this initial struggle, Subhash went onto deliver hit after hit, till 2005 he had release fifteen movies under his own banner – Mukta Arts and thirteen of those were major successes. This an enviable record which not many directors in this country can claim to have with the exception of Yash Raj Films and more recently karan Johar. His movies have established stars who were struggling, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff have all been beneficiaries of his movie making skills. Movies like Karz in 1980, then Vidhaata in 1982, Hero starring his one time favorite actor Jackie Shroff 1983, Karma in 1986 starring Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher as the terrorist Dr. Dang and Ram Lakhan starring Jackie and Anil together were all super hits and established Subhash as one of the most successful director of that time.

In the beginning of the 1990’s too he tasted major successes, Saudagar released in 1991 was 2 of the country’s most iconic actor come together, Raj Kumar and Dilip Kumar starred together and their dialogue delivery was a treat for every movie watcher. The movie fetched Subhash a Filmfare Award for best director. Pardes and Taal(starring Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Aishwarya Rai, Amrish Puri, Alok Nath and Shahid Kapoor as special appearance) two his other movies too were international hits and got listed in the Top 20 movies in the US at time of release.

But thereafter he couldn’t replicate his magic and Yaadein released in 2001 and Kisna released in 2005 failed to capture the imagination of the audiences. He has not release a movie as director since then and in 2008 April he will be releasing Black & White, a move that tries to look into what goes in a mind of a terrorist. He has directed and produced the movie. He has also produced movies like Aitraaz in 2004, 36 China Town in 2006 and also Apna Sapna Money Money in 2006 all of these three have met with moderate success.
