Bollywood Actress Sushmita Sen
Sushmita Sen was born on 19th November 1975 in Hyderabad, India and grew up in New Delhi. Her father, Shubeer Sen is a former Indian Air Force Wing Commander while her mother Mrs. Subhra Sen, a professional jewelry designer & fashion artist. While she grew up she attended the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute School and studied English there. Later on she undertook classes in journalism, which she thought would shape up her career. But as fate has it for most of us, what we plan during our schooling days we never go on to achieve that and instead we turn out doing something we never even imagined doing in our wildest dreams. The same was to happen with this beautiful young lady. In 1994 that is when she was aged 18 applied to take part in the Miss India contest. Before deciding to be a contestant in the Miss India Contest she was already active in fashion shows. In the same contest a girl named Aishwarya Rai also put in her application. Even in those days Aishwarya Rai was so beautiful and everything about her was so perfect that many participants withdrew their name and Ash was the odds on favorite to win. Seeing the other contestants withdraw even Sushmita withdrew her application, but her mother instilled in her the confidence to take part and compete. Sushmita famously went on to win the title and Aishwarya came in second. By winning the contest Sushmita was India representative at the Miss Universe Contest to the held in Manila, Philippines that year. As it was in the case of Miss India contest, at the Miss World contest too Sushmita was trailing other contestants but in the end the judges picked Sushmita Sen for her overall personality, her confidence and the way she carried herself in the contest preliminaries. Thus she became the first Indian to win the Miss Universe title. Once she returned to India after winning the title she was flooded with offers for modeling, acting and TV ads. She took a plunge into Bollywood film and her debut Bollywood movie ‘Dastak’ was released in 1996. The movie was something that was becoming very common the world over. A famous personality or beautiful woman is followed everywhere and anywhere she would go. She plays being a victim of a stalker. Though the movie didn’t have a good return at the box office but she was happily welcomed into the Bollywood film industry. Her next movie was a Tamil film titled ‘Ratchagan’ and it was a huge hit and Sushmita had her first success never mind it being a south film. Thereafter she appeared in many Bollywood movies but success somehow managed to elude her. Then after a period of more than two years she starred in the David Dhawan flick ‘Biwi No.1’ opposite Bollywood brat and hunk Salman Khan. She gave a splendid performance that surprised everyone and the movie brought her the first success of her career and for director David Dhawan it was another hit in the ‘No.1’ series of films. Her next movie was with current Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan. She did a complete romantic film in the film ‘Bus Itna Sa Khwab Hai’. Thereafter came a performance that made everyone in Bollywood sit up and take notice of not just her growing beauty but her growing acting capabilities too. It was Meghna Gulzar’s directorial debut titled Filhaal(Tabu was another actress in the movie). Her acting won her acclaim from all quarters and she won the award of best supporting actress at the Zee Cine Awards for this film. She also acted in hit bollywood movie Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. But her career’s biggest success came in the form of ‘Main Hoon Na’ where she was cast opposite Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. It was also the biggest hit of that year and Sushmita had finally arrived in Bollywood the way everyone expected her to, with all the glitz and glamour, the dance and the acting. She also played a major role in the movie 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' with top indian actors like Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Kapur Patel, Sushma Seth, Reema Lagoo, Lillete Dubey, Delnaaz Paul, Shoma Anand, Kamini Khanna, Ketki Dave, Sonali Bendre, Satish Shah, Sulabha Arya, Athit Naik, Jhanak Shukla, Simone Singh, Rajpal Yadav, Dara Singh, Sanjay Kapoor(Guest Appearance), Uday Chopra(Guest Appearance), Rani Mukerji(Special Appearance), and Kajol(Special Appearance). She also played major role opposite Arjun Rampal in hit movie Aankhen. But apart form her Bollywood career and being a former Miss World, Sushmita is a very good person at heart and she leads her own life on her own terms. She lives in tinsel town with her adopted daughter Renee and spends a lot of time with her daughter. The way she lives her life is not digested well by people around her but then that’s the way she is, like her or not she will remain in everyone’s hearts.
