Bollywood Actress Tabu

Tabu

Tabu’s full name is Tabassum Hashmi Khan. Tabu as she is fondly called was born on 4th November 1970 in Hyderabad the capital of Andhra Pradesh in India. Soon after her birth her parents divorced. All her family members are very well educated and people in her family were mostly teachers. Her mother was a teacher and her maternal grandparents ran a school after retiring as professors. Her grandfather was a Mathematics professor. In the early years of her schooling Tabu attended the St. Anns High School in Hyderabad and there after she moved to Mumbai and for 2 years she studied at the St. Xavier’s College. She is the younger sister of former Bollywood actress Farha Naaz and her aunt is Bollywood actress and noted social activist Shabana Azmi.

Her first brush with Bollywood came in the movie ‘Hum Naujawan’ released in 1985 when she was just 15 years of age. She played the role of Dev Anand’s sister in the movie. Her first movie as a lead actress was the Tegulu movie titled Coolie No.1. Her first Bollywood movie was supposed to be a Boney Kapoor produced film, directed by Shekhar Kapur but it just got delayed and delayed. This movie was to be Boney Kapoor’s brother, Sanjay Kapoor’s Bollywood debut movie. Her first release though was ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’, the movie had nothing to be written about and flopped miserably. Then came the movie ‘Vijaypath’ starring then rising hero Ajay Devgan. There was a song in this movie ‘Ruk Ruk Ruk’ which became a super hit song of that year. For her fine performance she was awarded the Best Female Debut Award by Filmfare. But after tasting success with ‘Vijaypath’, Tabu could not sustain the same success for her other movies.

In 1996 Tabu returned to her winning ways by delivering two hits. One being Saajan Chale Sasural and the other was Jeet. Saajan Chale Sasural was opposite one of Bollywood best comedy actors – Govinda and since Govinda was acting in the movie the comic flair had to be of the highest order. In Jeet she worked along side Sunny Deol and as most of his movies are this too was an action packed movie. Both the movies ended up being on the list of the top 5 grosser films of 1996. She also acted in the movie Maachis, the movie was a wonderful story that was based in the time when militancy was on the rise in Punjab. She plays the role of a sister whose brother is taken away by the police for interrogation and then he never returns back home. This was a stellar performance from an actress who was slowly showcasing her full potential. For her bold performance she won the National Award for best actress. She also acted in Hit movie Hum Sath Sath hain.

Her winning ways continued in 1997, she acted in J.P. Dutta’s movie ‘Border’ starring Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Pooja Bhatt, Sharbani Mukherjee and Tabu herself. Border was based on the real life events of the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He covered the events that took place in the battle of Longewala. Though her role in the movie was a very minor one but the movie was the year’s biggest success and to be associated in a movie covering a part of the country’s proudest moments in the battlefield would have been worth the small role she got to play in it. She was holding her self amidst all the other leading actress of her time and she was beginning to carve a reputation as being a very good actress.

1999 proved to be her best year at the box office she starred in two of the year’s biggest hits. Her first movie ‘Biwi No.1’ was the year’s biggest grosser and Hum Saath-Saath Hain directed by one of Bollywood’s leading directors Suraj Barjatya and it was the year’s second biggest hit. In 2001 she went on to act in the film ‘Chandni Bar’ which was directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Her acting was outstanding and exemplarily and put her cut above the rest of the crop of Bollywood actresses. She won her 2nd National Award for Best Actress for this movie.

Thereafter she has mostly appeared in non-commercialized movies. She appeared in movies like Maqbool, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2003. In 2007 she acted in her first Hollywood movie directed by famous director Mira Nair titled ‘The Namesake’. This movie was a huge hit internationally and more so in the UK & US. Her other notable recent film release was the Bollywood movie ‘Cheeni Kum’ where she starred opposite Bollywood legend and superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
