Bollywood Actress Urmila Matondkar

Urmila Matondkar

Urmila Matondkar was born on February 4th, 1974 in Mumbai, India. She has done her education from Pune University. Her father is a lecturer by profession. She was very good at academics and this can be said because of the fact that she was awarded scholarship when she was in fourth standard.

Urmila Started her career at a very early age. But it is also well known fact that she didn’t dream of becoming an actress. Her first film as a child artist in Bollywood was Kalyug in 1980. But her 1983 film directed by none that Shekhar Kapur who now is an eminent Hollywood director called Masoom was a very nice kids movie that dealt parents having extra marital issues. Her role was really fantastic and many of those who watched the movie would still remember her in the movie some 25 years after its release. In the movie she co-starred with Jugal Hansraj, Paresh Rawal, Ashok Saraf, Ranjeet, Reema Lagoo, Raza Murad and Gulshan Grover. This speaks a lot about her acting in the movie. Because in today’s fast paced lives its hard to remember most movies only the ones like Chak de, Tare zamen par and DDLJ(dilwale dulhania le jayenge) to name a few are worth remembering. She thereafter too continued to appear in Bollywood movies such as Dacait made in 1987 in which she plays actor Sunny Deol’s young sister.

Once she grew she was ready to take Bollywood by storm. Her first movie as an adult actress was ‘Bade Ghar Ki Beti’. Her next movie was ‘Narasimha’ where her co-star was Sunny Deol. This was an action thriller that had at the center stage Sunny Deol and the villain. In 1992 she was acting along side newcomer Shahrukh Khan in Chamatkar, incidentally this movie was Shahrukh Khan’s Bollywood debut movie. The movie was a fun fantasy movie but did not do too well at the box office resulting in more despair for Urmila. This trend continued with another disaster of a movie at the box office in the form of Shreemaan Aashique released in 1993. The spate of flops might have had Urmila in a spot of brother. Her most notable films in the 1990s since Rangeela have been Judaai alongside Sridevi and Anil Kapoor, and for which she received various award nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Satya where she proved her strong dramatic abilities.

But life is a circle of highs and lows, what goes up must come down and what is laying low has got the chance to rise. Urmila then was signed on by Ram Gopal Verma, a director with whom she would go on to be successfully associated many times in her long career. She was signed by him to star opposite the Bollywood perfectionist Aamir Khan in a film titled ‘Rangeela’. This film proved to be the success that was till now eluding her. Her performance as an extra looking to make it big in the dancing scene in Bollywood movies was perfect. She also received the nomination for Filmfare award for Best Actress. A.R. Rahman gave the music score for the film and the costume designer was Manish Malhotra. His dresses were very refreshing and gave Urmila a very sexy look something that she had never before looked like in any of her earlier movies. She had over night become the envy of other successful actresses and her new image was suddenly a threat to even established Bollywood heroines.

Since then on she became Bollywood’s favorite pinup girl. She had producers offering her roles that were earlier never offered to her. She grabbed all the opportunities that came to her with both hands. But she kept her best for Ram Gopal Verma productions due to which she has often been linked romantically to Mr. Verma. A slue of releases like Daud in 1997, Satya – a movie on Mumbai gangesters in 1999 (performance highly apperciated), Kaun released in 1999, Mast in 2000, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya released in 2001, Bhoot – another wonderful proving her acting powerness released in 2003 and Ek Hasina Thi in 2004.

Urmila is a person of few words, she likes to remain private. She doesn’t like to shout like a mot of other actresses do to catch the attention of the media. She stays cocooned in her won life and will come out when she perfers too. This also allows people to make stories on her life and speculate on it. The good things is that she remains unaffected by such developments.
