Bollywood film director and producer Yash Chopra

This man needs no introduction from anyone. He is none other than Yash Chopra. Yash Chopra was born in Lahore which now a part of Pakistan to a Punjabi family on September 17th 1932. He was the youngest of all the 8 brothers and sisters in his family and his father’s name was Vilayati Raj Chopra (an accountant in the PWD establishment). The family moved to India during the time of partition.

He started his career as the assistant director to Mr. I.S. Johar and slowly worked his way up to work for his elder brother, director/producer B.R. Chopra. It was his brother Baldev Raj Chopra who gave Yash Chopra his first opportunity at directing a movie. The movie was Dhool Ka Phool that was released in 1959. Both brothers went on to make many more movies together and the most note worthy of them being Waqt released in 1965. Yash Chopra is an eternal romatic and his flavor for music could put many mestros to shame, all his movies have music that are trendsetters of their time, after each music has been release all the previous music doing the rounds feel somewhat inconsequential.

He later parted ways with his elder brother in 1973 and set up his own production company under the name of Yash Raj Films, which today is the most successful film production company in India. But the journey hasn’t been easy as it is for all successful people. The same year he released Daag: A Poem Of Love, the movie was a success and thus started a journey ofman who has given the country some of its most memorable hits and today at 75 he is still going strong.

His association with the legendary Amitabh Bachchan is the talk of what dreams are made of. His and Amitabh’s pairing was so successful that any movie released directed by him starring Amitabh opened to packed house with people thronging the theaters to watch the movie first day first show. The two films that are still remembered today by one and all are Deewar(starring Amitabh bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi, Madan Puri and More.) in 1975 and Kabhi Kabhi released in 1976, both of them are enternal classics and set the benchmark for the 70’s.

Both the movies are a complete opposite of eachother yet Amitabh’s portyal of the angry young man and Yash Chopra directions caught the imagination of the entire country and even when seen today it is a simply fantastic movie and a complete classic. The other movie Kabhi Kabhi was a complete romantic movie wherein the main character is in love with his girl friend but girl is forced to marry against her wishes and when their kids grow up they meet and fall in love with eachother.

During the 1980’s Yash Chopra was not as successful but when he started churning out hits then there was no stopping him, film like Chandni starring Vinod Khanna and Sridevi. The movie was the biggest grosser of that year and once again proved that there is no better in the business of movie making than Yash Chopra. Subsequently his son Aditya Chopra joined his father business and the kind of success he has brought to Yash Raj Films was ever seen earlier before. His another son Uday Chopra is also a well know young bollywood actor. Aditya’s 1st directorial venture Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayage was a blockbuster and has the longest ever running initial release in cinema history. In 1997 Yash Chopra directed Dil To Pagal Hai which was a super hit, thereafter he took a break from direction and returned to give his auidences another superbly crafted love story like never told before – Veer-Zaara and Bunty Aur Babli.
