Bollywood Actress Zeenat Aman
Zeenat Aman was on 19th November 1951 to a Muslim father named Amanullah who happened to be the storywriter for the much-acclaimed Bollywood movie ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ while her mother happened to be a Hindu. Zeenat’s father died when she was merely 13 years of age. Zeenat completed her schooling for the St. Xavier’s College and then went to Los Angeles for her higher education. Upon returning from Los Angeles, she started her career as journalist with the famous movie magazine Femina. Then after a while of working with Femina she took up modeling assignments. She then took part in the Miss India Contest where she won the 2nd prize and that gave her the ticket to contest at the Miss Asia Pacific Contest. And at the Miss Asia Pacific Contest she did not disappoint, she won the contest and became one of the few Indian girls to have won a major international beauty pageant till that time. She then entered the Bollywood film industry and is said to have revolutionized the way Indian females looked and styled themselves in Bollywood movies. For her bold roles and showing off her skin she is credited to being the 1st real sex symbol of Bollywood films. She made her Bollywood debut with a tiny little role in the movie titled Hulchul that was released in 1971 and was made by O. P. Ralhan. Then she had a 2nd release of 1971 with the movie ‘Hungama’ that starred none other than Bollywood all time leading singer Kishore Kumar as the actor, but the movie failed misrably at the box office and she was written of as an actress who just had the look but not the acting skills. But as fate would have it she was to chance upon the golden opportunity of acting in one of the movies that was being made by actor-director Dev Anand. First this role of a playing Dev Anand’s sister in the movie was offered to another actress but the actress insisted on having the lead role that had already been assinged to actress Mumtaz. At the last mintue Zeenat’s name came into the picture and she bagged the role. She also featured prominently in the video for the song “Dum Maro Dum” which over a period of time has been remixed over hundreds of times and at the time of release became a rave. Zeenat starred in many movies along side Dev Anand after the super success of this movie and the most successful all her Dev Anand starring movies was ‘Warrant’ that was released in 1975. In 1978 she starred in the movie ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ that was made by the lengendary actor-director-producer of international fame Mr. Raj Kapoor. The theme of the movie tells that we as humans give far greater importance to out beauty compared to inner beauty. Zeenat appear in many revealing sqeuences and her breasts are visibly from beneath the sari that she uses as a drape. The film could not cash upon her sex appeal and was a box office disaster but her career received much impetus thereafter and her too was much apperciated overall. She received the nomination for Best Actress Award from Filmfare. She was a good actress and there’s no doubt about that, but there are always many good actress working in Bollywood movies at the time and the same holds true even today. But her contribution is much more than just being a noted actress, she changed the whole way main stream Bollywood actress would style themselves on screen, after her bold and sexy performances gone were the days when being conservative females actresses was the only good option. She wasn’t a flesh selling or vulgar kind of actress, during her prime she was a confident young actress who knew how to be different from the rest, she simply excelled at what she did. Chori Mera Kaam, Chhaila Babu(The film stars Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Asrani, Om Shivpuri and Ranjeet.), Dostana(The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman, Prem Chopra, Amrish Puri, Helen, Pran and Paintal) and Lawaaris(The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Zeenat Aman and Raakhee Gulzar) are a few of her major successes for which she will always be remembered.
